3. HISTORY
A proud and passionate nation
Welsh have a strong sense of their history. Maybe it’s because of all those invasions.

famous battles were fought, fortresses built to keep invaders at bay, as well as more

of the industrial revolution, like coal mines.

4. THE PATRON SAINT OF WALES
St David's Day is celebrated on March 1, in
honour of Dewi Sant or St David.
St David is the patron saint of Wales. He was a
monk who lived on bread, water, herbs and leeks
and died on March 1, 589 AD. Paintings of St
David normally show him with a dove on his
shoulder. According to legend he was the son of a
prince of Dyfed (a region of Wales) and uncle of
King Arthur; he was responsible for the adoption
of the leek as the national emblem of Wales, but
his own emblem is a dove.

Geography
Small country - big views
For a small country they have a varied and
dramatic landscape.
There are nearly three million of Welsh living
there. The main population and industrial areas
are in south Wales, where you’ll find Cardiff, the
capital city.
Wales is a land of green hills, forests and
farms. Most of the people speak English
but there is also a Welsh language and a
Welsh culture.
Everyone in Wales can speak English but about 20% of the people use both
English and Welsh.

6. WALES
The highest mountain peak in Wales is Snowdon. It
is 1085m (3560 ft) high. It lies in the Snowdonia
National Park, an important tourist centre. There is
a little railway going up, but some people prefer to
go climbing. Snowdon is included into the territory
of Snowdonia – a National Park famous for its
picturesque mountain scenery.
7. WEATHER
Their green and pleasant land needs the rain
They must be honest here - their weather is unpredictable.
Sure it rains. But that’s why the grass is so green. And the beauty of Wales is that the
closeness of the mountains and coast means that the weather can change
quickly, and within very short distances. It could be raining in one village whilst the
next one along has glorious sunshine.
Winter days are short, with snow almost guaranteed.
Temperatures across Wales usually make it to the 20° in the summer months when
the sandy, white beaches really come into their own.
