WITS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating
literacy and a love of reading throughout Chicago's
public schools. Run by volunteers, WITS implements
programs designed to bring communities together by
fostering a love of reading. The goal is to show students
that reading is fun as well as instrumental in working
toward a better future.

3.  WITS programs come in seven varieties, with many
targeting specific demographics. The Early
Childhood program sees three professional
volunteers work one-on-one with kindergarten
students each week. Each volunteer-student pairing
spends 15 to 20 minutes reading, with the goal of
helping the student develop reading fundamentals.
The WITSummer in the Parks gathers students ages 7
to 10 once a week, five weeks each summer, and
asks them to participate in literacy-themed activities.
WITS views the summer program as critical: without
the structure of the classroom, many students do not
read during the summer months, which gives their
literacy skills the chance to slip.
