• Emotive language is words that stimulate a
feeling in the audience. These are sometimes
called ‘loaded’ words as they contain a message
that is subtly telling the listener what to think or
believe. An example is ‘the Negro is still
languished in the corners of American Society
and finds himself an exile in his own land.
• The effect of this is to create empathy and makes
  the audience feel the emotions
• First person gives more personal feeling to the
audience, speaks directly to you making you
feel personally involved in what is happening
in the issue. Such as I, me, my, we, us, our
• An example is ‘we stand today’, ‘we cannot
  walk alone’, ‘ I have a dream’.
• Repetition is when a word/phrase is repeated.
  For example ‘I have a dream, I have a dream…’
• The effect of this is to emphasise an idea and
allows the audience to have a better
understanding allowing the message not to be
  forgotten.
• Poetic devices such as simile and metaphor
  are used in speeches
• They are used to compare things with one to
another letting the audience have a image on
  their mind.
• An example is ‘This momentous decree came
as a great beacon of light’.
