‘Pop’ began as a term used to describe popular music in the Western
World between the 1950s and 1960s.
The term was initially used in reference to music by the likes of ‘Rock N’
Roll’ bands such as The Rolling Stones, which were the most ‘popular’
groups of the 1960s, rather than a unique ‘genre’.
‘Popular’ was defined as music which garnered a large audience and
held a wide appeal nationally and/or globally.
Original ‘pop’ music was a contrast to ‘art music’, which referred to
music which adapted from classical Western music, and sometimes
appealed to a more exclusive audience.

4. Pop Music Genre
‘Pop’ as a genre has been developing from the 1960s to the present
day, with changes in media outlets and the creation of new technology
constantly altering its categorisation and conventions.
The genre derives inspiration from ‘popular culture’ and thus has roots
in many other genres such as soul, urban, rock, etc.
The genre is most prevalent in Britain and the USA with acts such as
Michael Jackson and Madonna reaching acclaim throughout both
countries on a wide scale.
