2. How Does Your Media Product
Represent Particular Social Groups?
Shot Sizes

                                Establishing shots are a
                                common convention in
                                 social realism movies,
                                   as shown in This Is
                                  England. This shows
                                   where our chosen
                               represented group lives,
                                occupies or is currently
                                  situated. It gives the
                               introduction context and
                                can help the viewer the
A shot from This Is England. understand. A shot from my product.

                                 Wide shots are also
                               used to the same effect.
                                This is more personal
                                  though. Instead of
                               setting the scene for the
                                  social group in the
scene, it sets it for the
                                  person or group of
                                 people in the scene.
A shot from my product. A shot from Bullet Boy.
Takes

Long takes in my movie This is also used in partnership with pans
introduction to show the to further connote and show his sporadic
many hectic activities that life.
my character has to go
through. It shows a lot of
action in a long take to
emphasise his lifestyle. This
is used for him to be an
overall representation of
his social and economic
class. People in his social
situation, no father to take
control after the mothers
illness and economic class
of the lower class often live
in this sort of way; sporadic
and repetitive.
Example of the long takes and pans.
David Harris

David wears a branded work
jumper and shirt, this shows that he
works for the company that he
does. It reinforces the idea that he
is more responsible than he needs
to be at his age by being the main
provider for the family. He also
wears large baggy jeans that
reveals his underwear that could
mean two things. First, he has had
to buy clothes that don’t fit due to
their current economic status.
Secondly, it could be metaphorical
for his childish side. The side that
he doesn’t show at home when he
isn’t being the man of the house.
Kevin Harris
Kevin’s attire consists of
his school uniform. This
represents his age, being
at school. A more striking
part of his clothing
includes thick black
gloves. These show the
houses temperature being
low and could possibly
mean that due to their
social status, they can’t
afford to have the heating
on during the day. This is
also shown by Melisa
being bundled under a big
quilt.
Alan Woods

Alan wears the same branded
shirt and jumper that David
wears, although different jeans.
Alan wears tattered, worn-out
jeans that show he is more
serious about his laborious job.
It shows that as an owner of a
company, he is just as prepared
to get down to business with the
physical work at hand,
alongside his down-the-ladder
counterparts and employees.
