We have chosen this song because the band who have agreed to be shot in our Music Video are a two piece, consisting of Drums and Guitar/vocals. Therefore, this suits us perfectly because Drenge are an identical format. The song has a good and clear theme of social Backwaters. The lyrics are ambiguous and are open to interpretation, which gives us a wide range of situations and plots to explore on this topic, not restricting us at all. The song is over 3 minutes, allowing us a decnt amount of time to tell a story and feature a lot of shots of our band giving a raw and passionate and performance.
The genre we have chosen is Rock, as it suits the genre of our track. The performers in our music video(my self and Ali Chester) will both wear black to connote the darkness of of our genre. The performers in our music video will play with lot’s of enthusiasm to represent the passion of the genre. From watching music video’s of other Rock Bands e.g. Aerosmith, Foo Fighters and Biffy Clyro I noticed that there a lot of close ups of the performers instruments and lot’s of long shots to establish within the music video that it is a ‘band’ who are performing, not a solo artist.
How we will Execute Genre Conventions successfully:
Performance – focus on instruments/skill as musicians. Long shots of band to show band togetherness Depressing tone/theme.Mix of performance and narrative.
The inspirations we have drawn from are other Rock bands such as Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and Artic Monkeys. All the bands follow the same conventions associated with Rock Music Videos.
The use of black is heavily used within the mise-en-scene.
All the members of the band display passion and enthusiasm within their performances
Not a single of these bands is a solo artist. The collectiveness is shown through each member playing an acting role in the bands music video’s. For example, in Foo Fighter’s ‘Everlong’ and ‘Learn to Fly’
Despite, the artist being a band, in each group there is a figure head. This is evident with all four bands e,g, Alex Turner, Joshua Homme, Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl.
I have chosen ‘Backwaters’ by Drenge. They are a two piece Rock Band from England who blend influences from Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age to create a unique sound. We chose this song because it suits our Genre of ‘Rock’ perfectly. Members of the existing band Drenge wear black extensively, are shown to be talented on their instruments by regular close ups of their playing and give a raw and passionate performance. All these features are key signifiers of the genre of ‘Rock’. The song explores themes of social Backwaters- living in desperate and cruel times with massive economic austerity.

Brief Outline:
Narrative shots are of his childhood – ends with killing himself. As his life deteriorates, he becomes more of an alcoholic Narrative “scenes” include getting beaten up – abused. Drinking. Shot ideas: As he becomes more and more of an alcoholic, FPS shots become more blurred.A long shot of him walking down to a train station – camera angle doesn’t change – he gets further away. After video’s finished, a pan of a train moving past with the background noise – the song has finished. We will be exploring the idea of ‘socail Backwawaters’ in our music Video.
How we will Execute Genre Conventions successfully:
Performance – focus on instruments/skill as musicians. Long shots of band to show band togetherness Depressing tone/theme.Mix of performance and narrative.

We need a girl to play the character of MaryGold.
This will be our band.
There called ‘Nerves’. It is a band I am currently in. To fit in with our genre we will wear black and perform with a high amount of passion and energy. We will use lots of close ups to show of the bands talents. And, long shots to present the band as a collective, not a solo artist.
Our own digipaks.
Our digipacks will feature pictures of the members of our band dressed in black, looking serious. We will feature picture of the remote countryside because that is paramount to our theme of Social Backwaters.
Our poster will feature shots of our band. Both of our members of the two piece band will be prominent in the shot- represent the band nature.
The Weather could cause a lot of problems because we will be relying heavily on country side shots. To Combat this, we will follow the weather forecast closely to look out for days when the weather is not due to rain.
With our countryside shots, we want to really empathise this feeling of ‘remoteness’ and ‘social backwaters’. This will be hard because in Dorset there are lot’s of houses, shops and roads surrounding the countryside.
There is an existing video for this song. Also, our idea of locating our video in a horrible rough place will be hard because we will have to find a rough looking place we can shoot our video at. This will be hard because we do live near a town like that. Also, to find actors who can play rough looking people will be very hard because most of our potential actors are well groomed teenagers.
