EVALUATION; QUESTION 01
In what way does your product use, develop or challenge the
forms and conventions of real media products?
2. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
THE FORMS/CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
I have been asked the question, “In what way does your
product use, develop or challenge the forms and
Brendon Allan | 30040996
conventions of real media products?”. To answer this
question I am going to be comparing the magazine I
have created with a well known music magazine of the
same genre.
I have chosen to compare my magazine with Kerrang! &
Q Magazine. The following pages show the comparison
between my cover, content and double pages with those
of a real music magazine. I have begun with the front
cover;

Kerrang! Cover My Cover

Both magazines contain fluff at
the top of the page, this is to
entice the reader into buying. I
have continued to use fluff and
plugs on my magazine around
the vocal point of the image.
Note that I have done this on
the left side of my magazine as
when they're stacked in shops,
only the left side is shown.
4. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE

Kerrang! Cover My Cover

Next notice the masthead, on
my magazine and the Kerrang!
magazine the masthead is
slightly covered by an image.
This shows that the magazine
is well known and that a
reader would easily notice it if
only a segment of the title was
shown in a shop or in general.

Now onto the main image, on
both magazines it is of a band
member. When taking my
photos I made sure to use a
model that could be identified
as a musician. I have used the
rule of 3rds to attract the
reader's attention. The main
article of the magazine can
also be seen across the front
of these photos, it is the
biggest thing on the page but
it does not distract a readers
attention from the title.
6. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE

Kerrang! Cover My Cover
I have used photos on the
Brendon Allan | 30040996
outside of my magazine to
show what is included. This
has also been done on the
Kerrang! Magazine cover.
A small point to mention is
that a barcode can be seen on
both magazines as well as an
issue date, I have done this.
Finally, the Kerrang! magazine
has used a colour scheme of
only three colours, I have used
a similar limited colour palette.

Q Content Page My Content Page

Now, onto the content page. On
the left is a content page from
the music magazine Q and on
the right is my content page.
Notice that both the real
magazine and my magazine
have a title, as well as this
they've a main photograph.
Again I've used the rule of 3rds
when placing my photographs.
8. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE

Q Content Page My Content Page

Now look at the structure of
the Q magazine, one side of is
dedicated to the content. I have
done the same in my magazine.
Look also at the fluff on the Q
magazine, it shows eye-catching
information about articles in
the content. I have used this
technique to a similar extent by
putting interesting content
related facts on my page.

Kerrang! Double Pt. I My Double Pt. I
Finally, the double spread. On
Brendon Allan | 30040996
the left is the first of a double
spread from Kerrang! magazine
and on the right is the first of
my double spread page.
See that the Kerrang! double
spread includes elements that
span over both pages, note also
that the images used on the
page correspond with the
magazine article. As you can see,
I have done the same on the my
double spread page.
10. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
THE FORMS/CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
Kerrang! Double Pt. II My Double Pt. I
Brendon Allan | 30040996
On the left is the second of a
double spread from Kerrang!
Magazine.
Next see that the Kerrang!
article uses a drop cap, I have
used this in my article also. If
you read the Kerrang! article it is
written in a "rock" style that will
appeal to the target audience. I
took this into consideration and
have done the same in my
magazine article.
11. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
THE FORMS/CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
Kerrang! Double Pt. II My Double Pt. I
Brendon Allan | 30040996
Notice also that the text on the
real magazine has been split into
columns, I had this fact pointed
out to me at the end of my
production stage and changed
my magazine to emulate this.
12. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
THE FORMS/CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
Kerrang! Double Pt. II My Double Pt. II
Brendon Allan | 30040996
On the right is the second of a
double spread from my
magazine.
To finish the comparison see
that both the Kerrang! page and
my own have page numbers.
Also note that the Kerrang!
double spread follows a three
colour scheme. My double
spread also follows a colour
scheme, the same scheme as my
front cover.
13. HOW DOES YOUR PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
THE FORMS/CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
Now that I have compared my magazine to those of a
real magazine distributer I can strongly say that my
Brendon Allan | 30040996
magazine does not challenge the forms or conventions
of a real media product, it instead uses them.
In the production of my magazine I felt it was best to use
and follow the conventions of other popular music
magazines as it not only gives me a rough plan to follow
but helps guarantee the success of my magazine.
