Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion Paper
Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperCognitive behavioral therapy
treatment (CBT) is a technique to psychotherapy that may be utilized to better manage
substance use disorders. CBT has been found to be beneficial in the treatment of alcoholism
and drug dependency, although it is widely employed to treat phobias, depression, anxiety
disorders, and other psychiatric conditions. This is incredibly relevant as it is component of
a comprehensive recovery plan. CBT allows persons learn to properly define the harmful
and self-defeating feelings and behaviors that may relate to the usage of drugs. It is a short-
term, targeted treatment approach to helping individuals who are reliant on drugs become
abstinent. This literature review examines and compares clinical studies conducted to
examine the usage a benefits of CBT as an intervention aimed at treating substance abuse
disorders Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperORDER A
PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER HEREComparison of Research QuestionsThe eight publications
have different research aims and objectives. In Magill et al. (2019), “A meta-analysis of
cognitive-behavioral therapy for alcohol or other drug use disorders: Treatment efficacy by
contrast condition”, estimates the efficiency of cognitive behavioral therapy for alcohol or
other drug use disorders. In Chiang et al.’s (2017) article “Efficacy of cognitive-behavioral
therapy in patients with bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials”
the research question is what are the treatment outcomes of patients with BD treated with
CBT plus medication? In comparison, the article by Vujanovic et al. ( 2017) Suggest a new
theoretical paradigm for transdiagnostic CBT for SUD-depression focusing on empirically
based psychological processes that underlie this increasingly common comorbidity. In
Martín-Pérez et al. (2019) article “Brief group-delivered motivational interviewing is
equally effective as brief group-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy at reducing alcohol
use in risky college drinkers” aimed at exploring the potential differences between both
early CBT interventions at producing different degrees of the intention to engage in future
alcohol reduction sessions. On the other hand, the research question of Olmstead et al.
(2019) is how does the cost vary between individual and group CBT interventions?
Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperSample PopulationsSamples for
CBT in the treatment of substance abuse disorders are all established for hospital or family
contexts and the only difference is the research method; quantitative, qualitative, or both.
Magill et al. (2019) study’s sample population included thirty randomized controlled trials
examining the effectiveness of CBT for alcohol and other SUDs. Another article by Chiang et
al. (2017) used 19 randomized controlled trials consisting of 1384 patients with type II or
type I bipolar disorder as a sample population. In comparison, Vujanovic et al. (2017) article
used a sample of 20 participants on in home and family setting. The sample population of
Martín-Pérez et al. (2019) article had 1005 participants from different colleges as the
sample population. The article by Olmstead et al. (2019) used the sample population of 150
women seeking medication for alcohol use disorder at an outpatient healthcare
facility.Limitations of the StudyIn Martín-Pérez et al. (2019), the article used a convenience
sample of college students, in which females were overrepresented. The article by Chiang et
al. (2017) made some comparisons that were limited by the sample size. Only four studies
had over 100 patients, and the other RCTs used small samples. In Vujanovic et al. (2017) the
limitation of the study is that in the overall and subgroup studies, moderate-to-high
heterogeneity was found, suggesting that a certain range of confounders, like gender, age,
and CBT approach, may be one of the causes of heterogeneity influencing the findings. In
Olmstead et al. (2019, the "file-drawer" dilemma is a significant issue in meta-analysis.
Nonsignificant findings could not have been published, thereby biasing CBT's existing
outcomes in a beneficial direction. In comparison, the article by Hogue et al. (2018) had a
limitation that the authors employed a convenience survey of young adults in which women
were overrepresented, while we undertook a rigorous testing to improve the variability of
the sample in many fields. In addition, the sample size can restrict the data's
generalizability. Integrated with drop-outs, this issue contributed to a smaller sample size
when creating observations Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion
PaperConclusionResearch studies have shown that substance abuse is a widespread
condition in the United States. With society's ever-increasing pressure in the context of
insurance expenses, direct and indirect costs to families and victims; it is important to
examine appropriate strategies for treating this condition. A powerful approach that may be
utilized to combat drug dependence is cognitive behavioral treatment. The value of
cognitive behavioral therapy has been proven in the different ways of drug dependence by
the data presented above. Additionally, CBT can help address the psychological morbidities
that addicts experience. While the complexity in proof centered on limited studies is the
main obstacle in the results taken from the paper, CBT is an efficient psychosocial
procedure. The effectiveness rate of this approach rises dramatically when paired with
synergistic approaches including pharmacotherapy, team interventions motivational
counseling, and relapse reduction and contingency mitigation. The study ramifications of
this paper are the need for better elaborative research on the ten drugs of abuse mentioned
in DSM-V that have not been thoroughly examined.ReferencesCarroll, K. M., & Kiluk, B. D.

PaperImproved quality of life through use of cognitive behavioral therapyThis paper
discusses the PICOT question that the author will explore for the capstone change project
addressing substance use disorder. The author will also discuss the nursing intervention,
clinical problem, patient outcomes, patient care, and healthcare agency related to the PICOT
question that will guide the implementation of the change project to influence patient
outcomes.PICOT question: Among patients with substance use disorder (P), does the use of
CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) (I) compared to no behavioral therapy (C) result in
improved quality of life (O) within 12 weeks? (T)Nursing InterventionThe nursing
intervention to address the PICOT problem is utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy. The
recent use of cognitive behavior therapy as a form of psychotherapy has been significant in
preventing addiction, relapse, and improvement of thought connectivity. It also enables the
patient to realize their actions, feelings, and the full awareness of themselves, promoting
recovery from addiction and substance abuse (Vujanovic et al. (2016). CBT delivered as
group therapy has better outcomes than individual therapy in managing patients with a
severe addiction to drug use Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion
PaperClinical Problem and Patient OutcomeDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental
Disorders, 5th Edition defines substance abuse as a mental illness that results from abusing
ten different drugs. These drugs include; alcohol, caffeine, cannabis, inhalants, opioids,
sedatives, hypnotics, anxiolytics, hallucinogens (phencyclidine or arylcyclohexylamines, and
LSD), stimulants (amphetamine-type substances, cocaine, and other stimulants), tobacco,
and other or unknown substances. The mechanism of action of these drugs uses different
pathways in the brain. Commonly, the neurotransmitters affected include; epinephrine,
norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. Prolonged use of these drugs promotes
tolerance, which progresses into dependence after that addiction. Substance abuse
encourages the development of a psychoactive maladaptive behavior generated by the
consumption of addictive drugs (Magill et al., 2019). Significantly, this impacts the quality of
life, Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperPICOT ProblemEvidence-
Based SolutionCognitive-behavioral therapy is the most commonly used therapy among
patients admitted for alcohol addiction and other highly addictive drugs. The therapy is
broad, directive, and structured with several techniques that aim to reduce and remove
maladaptive ways of beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, and cognition. These elements as
translated into a behavior that is considered the standard for psychological interventions.
According to Martín-Pérez et al. (2019), cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective
treatment plan for patients with alcohol dependence and substance use addiction. This
therapy provides for tertiary preventions of drug consumption and a reduction in the
frequency of abuse. Therefore, patients initiated on the therapy have better outcomes
compared to those on other behavioral therapies.Nursing InterventionThe nursing
intervention of cognitive behavioral therapy is important for patients with substance use
disorder to improve their quality of life. It enables reduction of maladaptive behaviors and
enhance patient capacity to overcome addition. It also enables them utilize their potential to
actively participate in activities that improve the quality of their lives Cognitive Behavioral
Interventions Essay Discussion PaperORDER A PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER HEREPatient
CareThe use of CBT has shown efficacy to improve patient’s adjustment to new patterns of
life that are significant. Patients who cannot coordinate life activities due to drug addiction
can quickly realize their potential and walk the part of improving their lives. Chiang et al.
(2017) describe that patients with an alcohol addiction and substance use disorder can
improve the control of their emotions, feelings, and thoughts and reduce anxiety. Patients
with mental health disorders can experience difficulty controlling symptoms, especially
when confronted by an agent that aggravate the illness. However, several studies have
proven an evidence-based practice by using both CBT simultaneously with pharmacological
treatment of severe anxiety disorders. Pharmacological therapies suppress anxiety
symptoms while CBT enhances the realization of how to overcome the anxiety.Health Care
AgencyThe author purposes to implement this project in a large metropolitan hospital that
provides psychiatric inpatient and outpatient care to a diverse population. In the recent
past, substance use has increased among the young population and majority are developing
addiction to these drugs, especially in urban centers.Nursing PracticeAlthough the project
will incorporate multiple stakeholders, nurses will play a leadership role in ensuring the
success of this project. The primary role will be engaging patients on various activities
available in this therapy, supporting patients and performing evaluations on their progress.
Nurses will also facilitate the implementation of this therapy among patients who have been
enrolled. A collaboration with other health care providers will involve education, support
and use of an interdisciplinary approach Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay

students to apply their research to the problem or issue they have identified for their
capstone project change proposal, the literature review enables students to map out and
move into the active planning and development stages of the project. A literature review
analyzes how current research supports the PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and
what is not known in the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT

Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion Paper.docx

  • 1. Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion Paper Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperCognitive behavioral therapy treatment (CBT) is a technique to psychotherapy that may be utilized to better manage substance use disorders. CBT has been found to be beneficial in the treatment of alcoholism and drug dependency, although it is widely employed to treat phobias, depression, anxiety disorders, and other psychiatric conditions. This is incredibly relevant as it is component of a comprehensive recovery plan. CBT allows persons learn to properly define the harmful and self-defeating feelings and behaviors that may relate to the usage of drugs. It is a short- term, targeted treatment approach to helping individuals who are reliant on drugs become abstinent. This literature review examines and compares clinical studies conducted to examine the usage a benefits of CBT as an intervention aimed at treating substance abuse disorders Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperORDER A PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER HEREComparison of Research QuestionsThe eight publications have different research aims and objectives. In Magill et al. (2019), “A meta-analysis of cognitive-behavioral therapy for alcohol or other drug use disorders: Treatment efficacy by contrast condition”, estimates the efficiency of cognitive behavioral therapy for alcohol or other drug use disorders. In Chiang et al.’s (2017) article “Efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy in patients with bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials” the research question is what are the treatment outcomes of patients with BD treated with CBT plus medication? In comparison, the article by Vujanovic et al. ( 2017) Suggest a new theoretical paradigm for transdiagnostic CBT for SUD-depression focusing on empirically based psychological processes that underlie this increasingly common comorbidity. In Martín-Pérez et al. (2019) article “Brief group-delivered motivational interviewing is equally effective as brief group-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy at reducing alcohol use in risky college drinkers” aimed at exploring the potential differences between both early CBT interventions at producing different degrees of the intention to engage in future alcohol reduction sessions. On the other hand, the research question of Olmstead et al. (2019) is how does the cost vary between individual and group CBT interventions? Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperSample PopulationsSamples for CBT in the treatment of substance abuse disorders are all established for hospital or family contexts and the only difference is the research method; quantitative, qualitative, or both. Magill et al. (2019) study’s sample population included thirty randomized controlled trials examining the effectiveness of CBT for alcohol and other SUDs. Another article by Chiang et al. (2017) used 19 randomized controlled trials consisting of 1384 patients with type II or
  • 2. type I bipolar disorder as a sample population. In comparison, Vujanovic et al. (2017) article used a sample of 20 participants on in home and family setting. The sample population of Martín-Pérez et al. (2019) article had 1005 participants from different colleges as the sample population. The article by Olmstead et al. (2019) used the sample population of 150 women seeking medication for alcohol use disorder at an outpatient healthcare facility.Limitations of the StudyIn Martín-Pérez et al. (2019), the article used a convenience sample of college students, in which females were overrepresented. The article by Chiang et al. (2017) made some comparisons that were limited by the sample size. Only four studies had over 100 patients, and the other RCTs used small samples. In Vujanovic et al. (2017) the limitation of the study is that in the overall and subgroup studies, moderate-to-high heterogeneity was found, suggesting that a certain range of confounders, like gender, age, and CBT approach, may be one of the causes of heterogeneity influencing the findings. In Olmstead et al. (2019, the "file-drawer" dilemma is a significant issue in meta-analysis. Nonsignificant findings could not have been published, thereby biasing CBT's existing outcomes in a beneficial direction. In comparison, the article by Hogue et al. (2018) had a limitation that the authors employed a convenience survey of young adults in which women were overrepresented, while we undertook a rigorous testing to improve the variability of the sample in many fields. In addition, the sample size can restrict the data's generalizability. Integrated with drop-outs, this issue contributed to a smaller sample size when creating observations Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperConclusionResearch studies have shown that substance abuse is a widespread condition in the United States. With society's ever-increasing pressure in the context of insurance expenses, direct and indirect costs to families and victims; it is important to examine appropriate strategies for treating this condition. A powerful approach that may be utilized to combat drug dependence is cognitive behavioral treatment. The value of cognitive behavioral therapy has been proven in the different ways of drug dependence by the data presented above. Additionally, CBT can help address the psychological morbidities that addicts experience. While the complexity in proof centered on limited studies is the main obstacle in the results taken from the paper, CBT is an efficient psychosocial procedure. The effectiveness rate of this approach rises dramatically when paired with synergistic approaches including pharmacotherapy, team interventions motivational counseling, and relapse reduction and contingency mitigation. The study ramifications of this paper are the need for better elaborative research on the ten drugs of abuse mentioned in DSM-V that have not been thoroughly examined.ReferencesCarroll, K. Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperImproved quality of life through use of cognitive behavioral therapyThis paper discusses the PICOT question that the author will explore for the capstone change project addressing substance use disorder. The author will also discuss the nursing intervention, clinical problem, patient outcomes, patient care, and healthcare agency related to the PICOT question that will guide the implementation of the change project to influence patient outcomes.PICOT question: Among patients with substance use disorder (P), does the use of CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) (I) compared to no behavioral therapy (C) result in improved quality of life (O) within 12 weeks? (T)Nursing InterventionThe nursing intervention to address the PICOT problem is utilizing cognitive behavioral therapy. The recent use of cognitive behavior therapy as a form of psychotherapy has been significant in preventing addiction, relapse, and improvement of thought connectivity. It also enables the patient to realize their actions, feelings, and the full awareness of themselves, promoting recovery from addiction and substance abuse (Vujanovic et al. (2016). CBT delivered as group therapy has better outcomes than individual therapy in managing patients with a severe addiction to drug use Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperClinical Problem and Patient OutcomeDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition defines substance abuse as a mental illness that results from abusing ten different drugs. These drugs include; alcohol, caffeine, cannabis, inhalants, opioids, sedatives, hypnotics, anxiolytics, hallucinogens (phencyclidine or arylcyclohexylamines, and LSD), stimulants (amphetamine-type substances, cocaine, and other stimulants), tobacco, and other or unknown substances. The mechanism of action of these drugs uses different pathways in the brain. Commonly, the neurotransmitters affected include; epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. Prolonged use of these drugs promotes tolerance, which progresses into dependence after that addiction. Substance abuse encourages the development of a psychoactive maladaptive behavior generated by the consumption of addictive drugs (Magill et al., 2019). Significantly, this impacts the quality of life, Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperPICOT ProblemEvidence-
  • 4. Based SolutionCognitive-behavioral therapy is the most commonly used therapy among patients admitted for alcohol addiction and other highly addictive drugs. The therapy is broad, directive, and structured with several techniques that aim to reduce and remove maladaptive ways of beliefs, thoughts, attitudes, and cognition. These elements as translated into a behavior that is considered the standard for psychological interventions. According to Martín-Pérez et al. (2019), cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective treatment plan for patients with alcohol dependence and substance use addiction. This therapy provides for tertiary preventions of drug consumption and a reduction in the frequency of abuse. Therefore, patients initiated on the therapy have better outcomes compared to those on other behavioral therapies.Nursing InterventionThe nursing intervention of cognitive behavioral therapy is important for patients with substance use disorder to improve their quality of life. It enables reduction of maladaptive behaviors and enhance patient capacity to overcome addition. It also enables them utilize their potential to actively participate in activities that improve the quality of their lives Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperORDER A PLAGIARISM-FREE PAPER HEREPatient CareThe use of CBT has shown efficacy to improve patient’s adjustment to new patterns of life that are significant. Patients who cannot coordinate life activities due to drug addiction can quickly realize their potential and walk the part of improving their lives. Chiang et al. (2017) describe that patients with an alcohol addiction and substance use disorder can improve the control of their emotions, feelings, and thoughts and reduce anxiety. Patients with mental health disorders can experience difficulty controlling symptoms, especially when confronted by an agent that aggravate the illness. However, several studies have proven an evidence-based practice by using both CBT simultaneously with pharmacological treatment of severe anxiety disorders. Pharmacological therapies suppress anxiety symptoms while CBT enhances the realization of how to overcome the anxiety.Health Care AgencyThe author purposes to implement this project in a large metropolitan hospital that provides psychiatric inpatient and outpatient care to a diverse population. In the recent past, substance use has increased among the young population and majority are developing addiction to these drugs, especially in urban centers.Nursing PracticeAlthough the project will incorporate multiple stakeholders, nurses will play a leadership role in ensuring the success of this project. The primary role will be engaging patients on various activities available in this therapy, supporting patients and performing evaluations on their progress. Nurses will also facilitate the implementation of this therapy among patients who have been enrolled. A collaboration with other health care providers will involve education, support and use of an interdisciplinary approach Cognitive Behavioral Interventions Essay Discussion PaperReferencesChiang, K.
