The document summarizes the collaboration between the Chemistry Department and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) at Boston College. It discusses the creation of a Chemistry Safety Committee with members from both groups that reviews incident reports and makes recommendations. Standard operating procedures have been established for various chemistry activities. Student input is gathered to improve safety practices. Research precautions are outlined for events at nearby Alumni Stadium to minimize risks. Consequences are defined for safety violations by individuals or groups. Implementing a chemical inventory system is also mentioned.

16. RESEARCH PRECAUTIONS FOR STADIUM EVENT
DAY: September 26, 2009, 2:00 pm
Effective from 11:00 PM the night before to 2
hours after the event.
• 1. REVIEW YOUR EVENT-DAY RESEARCH PLANS WITH YOUR P.I. OR HIS/
HER DELEGATE.
• 2. DO NOT CARRY OUT RISKY EXPERIMENTATION.
• Don’t try new and different experimental procedures. Don’t work with
chemicals you are unfamiliar with. Don’t scale up a reaction.
• 3. DO NOT PERFORM LARGE-SCALE PROCEDURES.
• Do not work with large volume containers of volatile materials, including
concentrated solutions of ammonia and mineral acids as well as organic
solvents.
• Do not fill solvent bottles in the solvent room on the lower level.
• 4. BE EXTRA CAREFUL HANDLING FLAMMABLES, OXIDIZERS & REDUCERS.
• Minimize the use of pyrophoric materials. Store flammable chemical
containers away from sources of energy. Double-check all flammable
chemical heating operations.
• 5. DO NOT USE MERCAPTANS AND SULFIDES.
• Don’t use other highly odorous chemicals either. Remember, just because you
can’t smell a chemical placed inside the fume hood doesn’t mean that people
outside can’t smell that chemical.
• 6. KEEP ALL CHEMICAL CONTAINERS CAPPED.
• 7. LIMIT THE USE OF THE HOUSE VACUUM WHERE POSSIBLE.
• 8. KEEP LAB DOORS LOCKED WHEN NOT IN USE AND KEEP
UNAUTHORIZED VISITORS OUT OF THE BUILDING.
• BE EXTRA CAREFUL!
