Assessing Your Chapter Scholarship Program

Standards & Policies
      Does the chapter GPA meet the National organization’s standards?
      Does the chapter GPA meet or exceed the All Men’s/Women’s average?
      Does the chapter GPA meet or exceed the All Fraternity/Sorority average?
      Does the chapter have members sign grade release forms for academic information?
      Does the chapter have a minimum GPA in the by-laws for pledging?
      Does the chapter have a minimum GPA in the by-laws for initiation?
      Does the chapter have a minimum GPA in the by-laws to hold office?
      Does the chapter have a minimum GPA in the by-laws for members to remain in good
      standing/limit social privileges?
      Is there a process to handle violations of academic policies?

Scholarship Program
      Does the chapter have a written scholarship program?
      Does the chapter scholarship program have a budget?
      Does the chapter set an academic goal for the term?
      Does the chapter publicize the academic calendar?
      Does the chapter provide a program of incentives and rewards for success?
      Does the chapter provide support systems to help members in academic distress?
      Does the chapter provide/require study hours for members?
      Are study hours monitored and courteous?
      Does each member set academic goals for themselves and report them to the scholarship
      chair?
      Is there a process to handle those not meeting expectations?
      Does the scholarship chair review these goals with the members?
      Does the chapter have a scholarship mentor program for new members?
      Does the scholarship chair report regularly at chapter meetings on academic issues?
      Does the scholarship chair set up support systems to help members who are falling short of
      their goals?
      Does the scholarship chair discuss academic requirements in the new member program?
      Does the scholarship chair participate in the development of the chapter calendar to insure it
      doesn’t interfere with academics?
      Is the scholarship chair part of the executive board?
      Does the chapter facility have quiet hours?

Resources
      Does the chapter have programs that develop good study skills?
      Does the chapter use a master calendar to avoid over programming?
      Are resources that offer academic assistance posted in the chapter location? i.e. counseling,
      study skills centers, tutors.
      Are programs offered to the chapter on cultural intellectual enrichment?
      Are programs offered to the chapter on resume writing and interview skills?
      Does the chapter have a library or study room?
      Does the library or study room have decent lighting?
Does the chapter have computing facilities?
       Does the chapter provide information on study abroad, co-op or internship opportunities?
       Do members get trained to handle individual academic issues?

Faculty Advisor & Faculty Relations
       Does the chapter have a faculty advisor?
       Does the chapter faculty advisor meet with the chapter at least once a semester?
       Does the faculty advisor meet with members in academic difficulty?
       Does the scholarship chair meet with the faculty advisor at least monthly to discuss
       scholarship programming?
       Do members feel comfortable contacting the faculty advisor?
       Does faculty advisor have a working job description and responsibilities?
       Does the chapter have a faculty appreciation event?
       Are members encouraged to introduce themselves to their professors each term?
       Is chapter attendance at scholarly programs encouraged?
       Does the chapter recognize an outstanding faculty member once a year?
       Does the chapter host way for members to interact with faculty on an academic level?

Chapter culture
      Do members attend class?
      Do members budget appropriate time to study?
      Do members seek academic support when needed?
      Are academics a part of recruitment?
      Are high school academic records used in member selection?
      Do members think grades are important?
      Do members respect chapter academic policies?
      Is there an expectation of supporting academic excellence?
      Does the chapter advertise academic society deadlines?
      Does the chapter financially support members’ initiation fees to honor societies?

Assessing your Chapter Scholarship Program

  • 1. Assessing Your Chapter Scholarship Program Standards & Policies Does the chapter GPA meet the National organization’s standards? Does the chapter GPA meet or exceed the All Men’s/Women’s average? Does the chapter GPA meet or exceed the All Fraternity/Sorority average? Does the chapter have members sign grade release forms for academic information? Does the chapter have a minimum GPA in the by-laws for pledging? Does the chapter have a minimum GPA in the by-laws for initiation? Does the chapter have a minimum GPA in the by-laws to hold office? Does the chapter have a minimum GPA in the by-laws for members to remain in good standing/limit social privileges? Is there a process to handle violations of academic policies? Scholarship Program Does the chapter have a written scholarship program? Does the chapter scholarship program have a budget? Does the chapter set an academic goal for the term? Does the chapter publicize the academic calendar? Does the chapter provide a program of incentives and rewards for success? Does the chapter provide support systems to help members in academic distress? Does the chapter provide/require study hours for members? Are study hours monitored and courteous? Does each member set academic goals for themselves and report them to the scholarship chair? Is there a process to handle those not meeting expectations? Does the scholarship chair review these goals with the members? Does the chapter have a scholarship mentor program for new members? Does the scholarship chair report regularly at chapter meetings on academic issues? Does the scholarship chair set up support systems to help members who are falling short of their goals? Does the scholarship chair discuss academic requirements in the new member program? Does the scholarship chair participate in the development of the chapter calendar to insure it doesn’t interfere with academics? Is the scholarship chair part of the executive board? Does the chapter facility have quiet hours? Resources Does the chapter have programs that develop good study skills? Does the chapter use a master calendar to avoid over programming? Are resources that offer academic assistance posted in the chapter location? i.e. counseling, study skills centers, tutors. Are programs offered to the chapter on cultural intellectual enrichment? Are programs offered to the chapter on resume writing and interview skills? Does the chapter have a library or study room? Does the library or study room have decent lighting?
  • 2. Does the chapter have computing facilities? Does the chapter provide information on study abroad, co-op or internship opportunities? Do members get trained to handle individual academic issues? Faculty Advisor & Faculty Relations Does the chapter have a faculty advisor? Does the chapter faculty advisor meet with the chapter at least once a semester? Does the faculty advisor meet with members in academic difficulty? Does the scholarship chair meet with the faculty advisor at least monthly to discuss scholarship programming? Do members feel comfortable contacting the faculty advisor? Does faculty advisor have a working job description and responsibilities? Does the chapter have a faculty appreciation event? Are members encouraged to introduce themselves to their professors each term? Is chapter attendance at scholarly programs encouraged? Does the chapter recognize an outstanding faculty member once a year? Does the chapter host way for members to interact with faculty on an academic level? Chapter culture Do members attend class? Do members budget appropriate time to study? Do members seek academic support when needed? Are academics a part of recruitment? Are high school academic records used in member selection? Do members think grades are important? Do members respect chapter academic policies? Is there an expectation of supporting academic excellence? Does the chapter advertise academic society deadlines? Does the chapter financially support members’ initiation fees to honor societies?
