The Kra Canal, also known as the Thai Canal, is a proposed ship canal across the Kra Isthmus in southern Thailand that would connect the Gulf of Thailand with the Andaman Sea, providing an alternative route for ships transiting the Straits of Malacca and shortening transit distances between Japan and China by 1,200 km. Recent proposals for the canal specify a width of 400 meters, depth of 25 meters, and length of 120 km. The effects of the canal's completion would not be felt in Malaysia for 15 years and could result in Singapore losing 30 percent of its shipping trade volume.
