Asked how often they used a computer in IDC’s2011 Consumer PC Buyer Survey, the worldwide results from the desktop PC users and the notebook PC users were remarkably similar. Just about half (49.1%) of desktop PC owners and 45.9% of notebook PC owners use their PC several times a day. Among users who used their PCs daily, the numbers were 29.5% for desktops and 26.6% for notebooks — and this was the segment with the largest statistical difference in usage frequency. All remaining segments differed by less than 1%. Email and Web browsing are nearly ubiquitous among consumers. Office productivity, music, and social networking have a somewhat lesser reach, as do games. Applications like video editing, Internet telephony, and GPS have only a small number of frequent users and a large number of "never" users.Data drawn from the Forrester Technographics online benchmarking surveys covering North America (US and Canada), Asia Pacific* (Metropolitan Mainland China, Metropolitan India, South Korea and Australia), and Europe (UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Sweden, and Poland) and Latin America (). Consumers in the regions were profiled by the following topic areas:Frequency of going online via a computerTime spent with different media (watching TV, using the Internet, etc..)Social media activities (blogging, social networking, etc..)PC activitiesOther online activitiesHere are some top-line insights from the data:In North America, online adults who own both a laptop and a desktop are the most active online: 90% go online several times per day and they spend an average of 15 hours using the Internet for personal purposes in a typical weekNorth American online adults who own both a laptop and a desktop are also most likely to be gamers: they spend an average of 3.5 hours playing video games on a computer in a typical week and 58% play games on a computer at least monthlyIn North America, Laptop owners are most likely to be participating on social networking sites: Three-quarters are visiting these sites monthly; 55% are updating their status on a social networking site at least monthlyIn EU7, similar to North America, online adults who own both a laptop and a desktop are the most active online: 75% go online several times per day and they spend an average of 14 hours using the Internet for personal purposes in a typical weekAgain, similar to North America, EU7 online adults who own both a laptop and a desktop are most likely to be gamers: they spend an average of 3 hours playing video games on a computer in a typical week and 51% play games on a computer at least monthlyMetropolitan Mainland Chinese online adults are showing similar behaviors as those in North America and Europe in that the desktop AND laptop owners are most active online and with playing video games on a computer.
Highlight relevant price bands. In the notebook market, the increasing promise of enhanced mobility features, such as all-day battery life and pervasive connectivity, at compelling price points, is expected to drive robust growth in the forecast horizon. The media tablet market may represent a threat to the notebook PC market, as media consumption focused usage models drive purchases. While annual media tablet growth of 55% is expected through 2014, most (80-90%) of that market growth expected to result in market creation and some (10-20%) cannibalization of the notebook market. This is a worldwide view. If we were look at this by geography, we will see many emerging regions (Greater China, Latin America, South Asia, Eastern & Central Europe, MEA, and India) are expected to grow at above-average rates. The mature regions, including Korea, will be slower growing through 2014. Greater China represents the most attractive region, combining both above-average market size and growth.Overall PC demand was softer in the 2H of 2010 due primarily to weaker consumer demand for notebooks in mature markets. Consumer spending on traditional PCs is expected to be negatively affected by the growing array of competitive devices that threaten to divert spending to new and compelling form factors. Even so, consumer represents the largest segment (64%) of the total PC and server systems, and is expected to grow at above-average rates through 2014. The commercial market has been stronger than forecasted in recent quarters, supporting shipments of servers, workstation, and desktops. The commercial segments, defined by headcount between small (10-99 employees), medium (100-499), large (500-999) and enterprise (1000+), are expected to grow within a 5-10% per year pace.On a separate slide we look at the desktop PC market specifically. There we see continued strength in commercial shipments and continued demand in emerging regions (that have historically favored desktops) is stabilizing this form factor, although its share in the overall PC market continues to erode. With over 75% of the PC market in 2000, the desktop market share has steadily declined to 40% in 2010, and is expected to decline further to around 25% by 2014.
