Why?
• People in Kenya and Tanzania are suffering from micronutrient malnutrition;
• Small farmers’ producity is low income low;
• Vegetable seed and raw product markets don’t work well
• BoP-consumers have no/limited access to nutritious food
• Project aims to improve this!
Private Sector Motivation:
• Breeding at Afrisem and selling seeds = Not at all ‘business as usual’
• New ‘world’ for Rijk Zwaan: new farmers, new clients, new environment, new
markets, new chains, new vegetables, etc.
• Need to collaborate with partners that bring additional strengths
• Need to collaborate with partners that know very well the local situation and work
closely with farmers and consumers…

What will this workstream deliver?
• One important way to contribute to decrease malnutrition is : vegetables
• Vegetables need to be produced, need to be marketed and need to become
available to consumers (especially BoP-consumers)

• The entire value chain for vegetables will benefit. Input suppliers, seed shops,
casual labor, transporters, traders and shop keepers may expect a better economic
prospect because of the overall productivity and profitability improvement.

Role partners
Rijk Zwaan:
• Supply Rijk Zwaan en Afrisem seeds
• Training of farmers through partner NGOs
• Technical assistence
• Support and contribute to marketing of vegetables in a more effective way; market
development
• Analyse of nutritious value of vegetables and include this in breeding programme
Rabobank Foundation:
• Train farmers on organisation/cooperatives, business planning, etc.
• Provide access to finance of all actors in chain
• Capacity building of entrepreneurs
• In cooperation with and making use of the networks of other parts of Rabobank
(e.g. Rabo development and Rabo International) Rabo Foundation is able to
stimulate efficient use of credit and to improve access to credit

GAIN:

• The Marketplace for Nutritious Foods
• GAIN has added value through its experience and expertise in reaching (BoP)
consumers with nutritious food. Its experience with behavior change campaigns in
Kenya is crucial for the success of the project.
WUR/CDI:
• WUR has skills complementary to Rijk Zwaan to train farmers and has a wide
knowledge regarding the entire value chain and food based approaches
• Developing drying technique
• Implementing the learning agenda on project level

Role partners
HIVOS and it’s local partners:
• Through HIVOS we found the right partners in rural Kenya and
Tanzania
• Local partners have extended network of farmer groups and
staff in localities
• Management of project at local level
• Local partners will work together with Rabobank Foundation in
organizing farmer cooperatives.
• Local partners will complement the expertise of Rijk Zwaan in
transferring that expertise to the farmers
Africa Bio Medica
• A local SME that dries vegetables on a small scale
• Provide support for the nutrient retention trials using its
existing facilities (properly managed and controlled lands, food
quality processing space and associated equipment, and an
extensive solar drying facility).
• Provide accommodation for WUR researcher trial methodology,
collection, storage and shipment of samples after drying.
