  1. In the final section of the manual we will discuss some of the barriers and challenges presented in social media learning, strategies and problem solving skills to help combat those challenges, as well as confronting business issues and strengthening those relationships. Finally, a description of social media tools will be provided, including the benefits, limitations and examples of organizational application. As stated previously, the manual is designed to be a complete self-guided tool and workbook to provide a deeper understanding of how social media can play a major role in learning and development. As social media becomes more prominent in both personal and professional environments, it is important to have established guidelines that will protect both the individual and the organization. Before social media tools are launched within an organization, guidelines must be set and understood by everyone in the organization. Content analysis of social media policies for all institutions listed in the Carnegie Classification Data File revealed that less than one-quarter of institutions had an accessible social media policy (Pomerantz et al., 2015, para. Abstract). People can express their thoughts and share them with the world with the tap of a finger, so people are sharing their ideas much faster and more often than in the past.
  2. Twitter is a social media tool used to share a wide range of information. Other users of the same social media tool can instantly see and reshare with others who are following their Twitter accounts. The benefits of Twitter are that you can share information on a global scale. That information gets reshared with others. Those who she the data can then comment about it and share that same information on other social media platforms like Facebook or teams to get a wide range of uses to see and share what was posted originally. The most significant benefit is that it is excellent for businesses, nonprofits, and schools to share news about their causes and what they need to succeed in their goals. Allows those who can help to see and contact the organization, offer their help, and share with others who can contribute. The article titled Integrating New Literacies in Higher Education: A Self-Study of the Use of Twitter in an education course allows students to communicate and strengthen their relationships and co-create( Nicholson et al., 2013). The limitation with the use of Twitter is users' hesitation in trying the social media platform because it seems difficult to use. The other limitation is the access to the internet connection, which prevents users from using social media apps like Twitter, Yammer, and Facebook. Ease of use is another limitation in using social media apps, especially for older users. According to an article titled Charting sustained usage toward mobile social media application: the criticality of expected benefits and emotional motivations, older users choose to use another social media platform called Zalo because of its ease of use(Cu Le, 2021).
  3. Yammer is another social media tool used for communication within business organizations. The benefit is that it allows the employees to work together and to show empathy to others within your workplace ( LOCK LEE, 2019). The limitation is that some employees struggle to find the time to use it and respond to posts or comments.
  4. TikTok is a popular social media platform that utilizes short videos to share content with others. Videos created in the app are anywhere from 3 to 60 seconds in length, while videos uploaded to the app from outside sources can be longer. The original intent of the platform was for entertainment purposes, but now it is finding a new purpose in another venue, education. Students do not need to sign up for a Tik Tok account in order to access the content, because it is viewable through shared links. According to Tutt (2022), “the platform is especially helpful for students who are reluctant to ask for help in class and need different entry points to the curriculum. TikTok videos—like any video content—give students the ability to access content asynchronously. Students can self-serve the gaps in their understanding and revisit these bite-sized lessons again and again until they understand them”. Videos can be used to deliver short lessons in an informal way. Music can be added to the videos and they can be further enhanced by adding rhythm and movement to the lessons. The limitations involved with the use of this social media tool are 1.) the level of privacy is fairly low, 2.) it is difficult to filter out or block scam accounts and clickbait, 3.) there is always the possibility that you can and will get exposed to offensive content, and 4.) communication does not always happen in real time.
  5. Microsoft Teams focuses on large scale chat-based collaboration in real time. The standout features of this platform include: Teams and channels, chat, document share, video calling, and screen share. The teams and channels feature allows for organizing communication boards and groups. Chatting, as stated earlier, works in real time and is quicker than an email. Document sharing on this platform is very easy as everything is stored in the cloud. Video calling is a great way to achieve face to face conversations even when the recipients are miles apart. Screen sharing helps to share information in a way that is for presentations and for troubleshooting. This platform is excellent for collaborating with fellow teachers for curriculum development, reaching out to a mentor for advice, and keeping up with content related to adult education. It can also be used to communicate with your students, deliver course content, and a resource tool for shared documents. While this tool is excellent for real time communication, organizing, and file sharing, it lacks actual content creation in the way that TikTok thrives. However, that is not to say that you could not share a TikTok video while using Teams.
  6. Social learning is an excellent way for learners to gain knowledge. It is known that using social media tools during training can support learning. Learning was strongly supported by using technology to increase social interaction and engagement. The use of technology created an environment where learning was both active and interactive (Altinay, 2017, p. 104). Although this well-known method of learning has been proven to be effective, it is not without drawbacks. Barriers to effective social learning can have a negative impact on training in the workplace and should be anticipated prior to putting this theory into practice. It is important to plan for barriers and have potential solutions in place to create an optimal learning environment. Three important barriers will be reviewed in this text. The first barrier to social learning is categorized as an emotional barrier. Some learners may have fears that prevent them from participating in effective social learning. These fears can be associated with interacting with others during learning experiences. The second barrier would fall under the category of environmental barriers. Environmental barriers such as distractions can hinder social learning. Loud noises or distractions caused by people would fall under this category. Lastly, psychological barriers can also prevent effective social learning. Examples of potential psychological barriers are attention deficit hyperactive disorder, autism, and dyslexia (Rice, 2022). Fortunately, all the mentioned barriers can be minimized by completing accurate assessments of the target population and carefully designing instruction to meet the needs of employees that are participating in social learning experiences. When implemented successfully, social learning can have a positive effect on workforce training. Participants incorporate what they have learned from others into their professional lives through social learning. These new behaviors can be attributed to discussions and observations of others. When the new behavior creates a reward, the behavior is reinforced and may be repeated. If the behavior creates a punishment, the behavior is less likely to be repeated (Williams, 2017, p. 263). Discussions that can lead to behavioral changes can be facilitated using social media tools such as live chat features and discussion boards. During workforce training, mentorship and counseling opportunities provide the necessary support to facilitate meaningful learning. In any training environment, it is prudent to consider the ethical dilemmas that both facilitators and learners may encounter. Failing to prepare or have a plan in place for managing ethical dilemmas can leave our organization exposed to potential liability. With that in mind, contingency plans to guide the handling of any ethical dilemmas encountered during learning are necessary. Examples of ethical dilemmas include, exposing protected information, preferential treatment, bullying, and inappropriate communication. To resolve ethical conflicts, our organization has implemented the following procedures. All members involved in any reported incidents will have their social media tool access suspended pending an investigation. The allegations will be reported to senior leadership and two designated managers will be tasked with collecting and analyzing information associated with the incidents. All information will be presented to an identified senior manager for review. After the senior manager consults with the senior leadership team, a decision will be made on any recommended disciplinary actions. The proposed decision will be reviewed by our legal team prior to any additional contact with any employees involved in the allegation. Involved employees will be notified of the decision by their immediate supervisors.
  7. Social learning is essential because much of what we do is social learning, whether it is learning from those around us or those we work with According to Bozarth (2010, Chapter 7). Social learning is not just participating in online social media platforms like Twitter, yammer, or Facebook. We learn by watching videos and sharing our knowledge with others, whether in person during a face-to-face conversation or sharing something on our social media platforms like Twitter. However, now more than ever, the way we share what we learn has changed. It has also changed the way we promote within our organization. Before social media, we used to share information within an organization by word of mouth, through radio ads, and television commercials which took time to make and hire on television slots. With social media apps and smartphones, anyone who wants to share something can make a video sharing information about their organization of choice and share it on their social media platforms like Twitter, ticktock, yammer, or Facebook. The data transmitted within minutes to hours is being shared, viewed, and reshared. Hence, the data has the potential to go viral and reach audiences beyond their own personal social media group. I would help promote within an organization by posting photos of events I attend on behalf of that organization and sharing them on my social media accounts. In addition to following the organization's social media platforms so if they share some new information, I can reshare it on my social media platforms so that the information gets to others outside of my social media group.
  8. You should have policies that will, Sehl (2020), “empower employees with the information they need to make the right choices on social media for themselves and the company.” Employees should always remember they are representatives of the organization where they work, so being professional on social media should not be a request. So, accountability is important to follow up on when policies or usages are disobeyed. If there are clear understanding and expectations given to the employees on the use of social media, organizations should set ramifications for any violation or inappropriate use of social media. Monitoring all communication should be routinely in a learning environment. Hierarchy in an organization is usually perceived by employees as leaders and followers. In many organizations, you have managers, supervisors, or directors; and employees usually follow the leader in a traditional hierarchy. However, social learning allows individuals to share information, suggestions, and ideas and create content, knowledge, and experiences with each other. Information and learning are just not one-directional from the leadership; in a social learning environment, hierarchy does not matter because everyone contributes to the subject and information in the group creating a community. This collaboration brings unity and cooperation and builds relationships that are valuable employees qualities to the organization. As we continue to embrace the high level of social media, social learning increases and changes how we do things and how we socially connect. Building and maintaining strong, productive and positive, and effective relationships based on trust will be different in how we do it. Employees will have to find new ways to interact, share ideas and knowledge, and bond with co-workers with diverse skill sets. Employees should be educated so they can be aware of and respect and appreciate the diversity of others and the different beliefs, styles, skills, and customs of other cultures to have a positive working relationship with co-workers. A social learning environment can foster richer relationships among employees. Diverse employees bring diverse talents, experiences, skills, suggestions, solutions, and perspectives that will contribute to discussions, decisions, and growth in knowledge of others in the organization. A sense of inclusion and trust in employees fosters stronger relationships, cooperation, and more productive work among the employees. “Strength lies in differences, not similarities.” Quote by Stephen Covey. How does social learning affect an organization’s goals and objectives? Social learning allows employees enough time to learn exactly what they need, with minimal interruption to their daily workflow. Finally, social learning enhances corporate culture and fosters workplace collaboration.Social media can be used to facilitate social learning through collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the fostering of creativity, enhancing social skills in the classrooms and workplace environment. Social media is an important component in social learning because it increases employees' participation in learning, employees are more likely to stay engaged and complete their program of study if they can reach out to coworkers involved in the same program or get help on a particular topic, promotes self-directed learning, which prepares students to search for answers and make decisions independently. Instead of relying on traditional models, social learning encourages learning in working environments and allows learners to pull knowledge from experts within the organizations and educational settings instead of having information pushed on them.. Adopting social learning in the workplace ensures continuous engagement, information retention, employee satisfaction, and impressive work culture. It shows care for well-being and boosts team morale and reintroduces the human element, allows employees and students to continue their education, and share ideas with colleagues and peers, while creating stronger bonds with each other at the same time (Hudson, 2020). o What are the indicators of success when assessing the effectiveness of social learning? The most common report about the success of a social learning program is how much was viewed / contributed / commented during the learning process. It tells a story about how many people were reached during their learning experience. A programs’ success can be measured by Test scores during and after the training. Evaluation of applied learning projects. Course completion and certification (Verma, 2022). How does resource allocation affect the overall effectiveness of social learning within an organization? Resource allocation is essential in project management because it allows for organizations to plan and prepare for project implementation and achieving goals. In addition, it helps schedule resources in advance and provides an insight into the project team's progress. When a company allocates its resources, it determines the resources that will be dedicated to the company's strategic plans. This means that resource allocation helps organizations put their efforts into the priorities of their operations. In education, Resource allocation consists of more than assigning dollar amounts to particular schools or programs. is the examination of the ways in which those dollars are translated into actions that address expressed educational goals at various educational levels(Lynch, 2011).
  9. Being able to problem solve is figuring out how to deal with situations and challenges that arise in a setting be it in the workplace or in your personal life. No matter which area a problem comes up in, having the skills to understand the situation and identify the underlying issue and then being able to resolve it comes with a set of experiences and training. There is an old adage of more is caught than taught and this rings true in an environment that fosters social learning. Social learning takes the approach of active participants in the class and those interactions and then sharing them along with any knowledge everyone possesses and developing a compilation of the ideas for a solution. Employees can learn through social interaction amongst coworkers and others within their environment. Workplace culture and collaboration are inherited and under a social learning environment workers have the ability to spend time learning what they need and with very little interruption from each other during their daily work routine. Social learning can enhance the culture of a company as it promotes collaboration of information and skills. We are humans are inherently social and feel valued when we are able to contribute to the greater good or work within a group setting.
  10. As the employee learns more about the company and the mission and goals of the company, it can create an atmosphere that encourages the employees to commit to the execution and completion of the goals and advancements to nurture improvement. Being a part of a whole unit or a bigger picture with continuous engagement, sharing of information, and collaboration promotes a strong connection within the department and with those individuals on the team or in the department. Employees see problems as opportunities to overcome not just problems that they have nothing to do with or that are someone else’s to figure out and resolve. Allowing the collaboration and sharing of information increases ideas and knowledge across cultures and continues to enhance the team’s ability to develop. People come from all backgrounds and cultures and when there is room to allow collaboration of ideas and sharing of knowledge, teams grow and develop at greater rates and that is all beneficial to the company’s growth. Leading a market requires a broad spectrum of knowledge and social learning can encourage that atmosphere. Building a commitment to stand on and achieve greater results causing the atmosphere to be cohesive and create positive team morale allows employees to stay longer with companies and with minimal turnover, customer satisfaction has a greater chance of being positive.
  11. In conclusion, it is important to remember that instructions on how to utilize social media for social learning can be beneficial. Providing the pathway for users through instruction to be able to navigate social media can help to ensure individuals understand the pros and cons of its use. A help manual to guide the individual with the optimism of reducing mistakes, inaccuracies or calamities that could cause damage to the individual’s career or personal life.
