About The Young Builders Alliance Achiever Award
The Australian Young Builders Alliance is a dedicated group of young builders who
provide targeted continuing professional development and networking opportunities
to young builders across the country. Members include recent graduates and current
students of building and construction courses in universities throughout Australia.
Building professionals face a tough challenge in keeping abreast of changes to the
commercial, technical and regulatory environment in which the building professionals
operate. The purpose of the Australian Young Builders Alliance is to bring young
building professionals together to discuss these changes and determine an
appropriate response from building professionals.
Each branch of the Australian Young Builders Alliance is encouraged to organise
activities in partnership with its regional AIB Chapter. These activities include:
Australian Young Builders Alliance — Activities
Organise seminars and workshops to further knowledge of building issues
Provide advice to AIB about policy options to support young professionals
Organise site visits to see best-practice building techniques
Host social activities and industry networking opportunties
Participating in the Australian Young Builders Alliance provides an opportunity to
develop leadership skills and serves as a focal point for developing a sense of
professionalism through meeting industry representatives and decison makers.
Significantly, the Australian Young Builders Alliance allows its members to meet with
more senior colleagues within the building and construction industry. These
professional networks open up new job opportunities for those entering the profession.
Given AIB’s extensive network of overseas branches, the Australian Young Builders
Alliance supports graduates and students looking to work overseas.
The alliance organises an annual round-table in concert with the Construct
conference, providing an opportunity to contribute to AIB’s policies and priorities for
the building profession. This round-table is chaired by the AIB National President,
reflecting the status that the Australian Young Builders Alliance enjoys.
Membership of the Australian Young Builders Alliance is open to any student member,
graduate member or full member of AIB who is under thirty years old. If you meet the
criteria, get involved as it’s a great opportunity to support your career development.
For more information on the Australian Young Builders Alliance contact the AIB national
office by telephone on +61 [0]2 6247 7433 or via email at yba@aib.org.au

The Australian
Young Builders Alliance
AIB — A Brief IntroductionThe Membership
Founded in 1951 and granted a Royal Charter in 1969, the Australian Institute of Building
(AIB) is the largest professional institute in the Asia-Pacific region dedicated to the
career development of building professionals. AIB has a long-held reputation as an
effective advocate for the building profession and delivering first rate member services.
AIB Projects and priorities
Providing enhanced status for building professionals in Australia and overseas
Delivering a comprehensive continuing professional development program
Organising the Construct conference series in Australia and internationally
Enhancing career opportunities and job prospects for building professionals
Being an effective authoritative voice for building professionals in the media
Recognition through the AIB Professional Excellence In Building Awards
Publishing the Construct magazine, newsletters and the Australasian Journal
of Construction Economics and Building academic journal
The Institute plays an important role in the establishment and maintenance of university
courses in building and construction management. Today, AIB members continue to
ensure that graduates possess the skills required by the industry. In 1975, at the request
of universities, AIB developed a course assessment / qualification accreditation system
which has proven to be of great value to academic institutions and the industry.
AIB also provides building professionals with a pathway to bring about positive
changes to the commercial, technical and regulatory environment in which they
work. The Institute achieves this goal through its membership and active participation
in a number of external organisations:
AIB External representation and membership
Australian Construction Industry Forum (ACIF)
Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) and Standards Australia
International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI) and the International Council
for Research & Innovation in Building & Construction (CIB)
Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), the Australian Sustainable Built
Environment Council (ASBEC) and Good Environment Choice Australia.
Since its establishment in 1968 the Australian Institute of Building Research and
Education Foundation has funded developments in education and specific research
projects. One of these projects determined the duties and responsibilities of, and the
levels of competence required by, professionals and technicians in the building and
construction industry. This reflects AIB’s ongoing commitment to industry research.
AIB Members are employed in a number
of senior roles within building and
construction companies in Australia and
internationally. AIB members work as:
Consultants and cost estimators
Construction site supervisors
Project managers
Construction directors
CEOs and general managers
In addition, AIB members also include
senior university staff associated with the
delivery of building and construction
management courses.
Look at the skyline of any major
Australian city, and each of the
prominent buildings will have been built
by an AIB member — that’s been the
case for more than a half century.
Around one-third of AIB’s members
reside outside Australia, reflecting the
international standing of Australian
builders and the quality of their work.
AIB is also supported by a number of
preeminent individuals who are
Honourary Fellows of the Institute:
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
His Excellency Sir Eric Neal AC CVO
Sir Laurence Street AC KCMG QC
Mrs Janet Holmes à Court AC
AIB members are employed by large
and small construction companies, by
government, universities and even
defence forces. If you’re a professional
builder, get involved today.
