Prepare a presentation document illustrating how consumers use technology and its impact on their lives.
• The world is changing and digital technology and the internet has changed very
rapidly and impacted the way we go about our daily lives. Over the last 10 years,
we have seen a massive change in the Internet and in particular with the growth
in social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Blogs. We have seen remarkable
improvements on the web since it was first introduced in 1989

Introduction
Access to the Internet
• Consumers and most households own an average of three devices. Mobile devices are
increasingly being used allowing people to stay in touch on social media, share
information and photos with friends and family and forums to engage in conversations.
Almost everybody is living two lives, an online life and a an offline life. Smartphones
bring together communities and with this comes the reliance on super fast data
• The internet is accessed in different ways of connecting to the internet using computers,
laptops, mobile devices or business enterprise and this varies on the location of home or
business. Signals and users can be connected using different internet speeds or available
services:
• Wireless connection
• Mobile connection
• Hotspots
• Dial-up
• Broadband
• DSL
• Satellite

Consumers use a number of
devices to search for information
on the internet. Smart phones,
tables, smart watches, mobile
laptops are one of the many
devices that consumers use to
browse online content.
Websites are mobile optimised
enabling consumers to shop
online, read news or content when
they are on the move.

• Smart devices offer consumers more freedom and a choice of
content to read and peace of mind
• Traditionally consumers would go to a number of stores to obtain a
quote e.g. a television, clothes etc. Today, every retailer offer an
online store where customers can compare, observe prices, features,
specifications and testimonials before making the decision to make a
purchase
• Digital transformation has changed the way that consumers shop,
make comparisons in the comfort of their own home, while in public
transport, in restaurants. Information is up to date and on hand when
required. Information is at their fingertips and they can simple share
their content and seek further advice
• Digital shopping has become the normal for consumers

How customers search for information
• People search for information online by using their favourite browser and most
commonly typing in keyword into the search field. The most popular search
engines world wide are:
• Google.
• Bing.
• Yahoo.
• Ask.com.
• AOL.com.
• Baidu.
• Wolframalpha.
• DuckDuckGo.
Of those who bought presents from a mainly online retailer, 73 per cent used a
laptop while 19 per cent used a tablet and 14 per cent used a smartphone

What consumers buy online
Online shopping is on the rise and consumers can purchase any product or service. Some of the
examples of what consumers are purchasing are:
• Groceries
• Mobile phones and internet services
• Insurance for home, health, business and travel
• Internet banking
• Ticket purchasing
• Travel deals
• Personal goods – clothing, shoes, accessories
• Subscriptions to video e.g. Netflix, gaming sites
With the rise of internet shopping for goods and services the ACCC provide information and
warnings for consumers to protect their rights and avoid scams

Online Video Consumption
• A study carried out online by Cisco has demonstrated that by 2020
consumers will be browsing video sites where internet traffic will be
account for 79% . HD and Ultra HD video streaming and virtual reality will
add to the rise of internet traffic. Consumers globally are demanding faster
broadband speeds and by 2020 speeds of up to 47.7Mbps
• Pay per view subscriptions has emerged as the major category of paid
online content in Australia and is on the increase globally
• Viewers are regularly watching catch up TV at their leisure and online
streaming of their favorite series or movies

Consumer trends
• Consumer online shopping experience has changed
remarkably in the last 3-4 years and in are future with
continue to change in a growing market
• Mobile devices have transformed the way we shop and the
we way work
• Traditionally consumers shopped for their personal retail
items and services. Today almost everyone browses the
internet on their mobile device to research a product or
service. In the workplace, research is carried out using
online sites and no longer referencing books
• 2017 saw an increase in Facebook advertising for online
retailers targeting the market that use social media
• The end to end process of shopping online will become
more seamless with improved security on check-out
• 62% of US consumers with Internet access shop online at
least once a month
• Retailers rely on customer feedback as a way of improving
experiences and price comparison online is convenient for
consumers. Price has become more competitive for retailers
• Free shipping and free returns makes shopping online more
attractive to consumers

Digital technology and the internet has seen a revolution particularly in the last 10 years. Changes from the
analogue mobile phone to the way consumers shop and interact. Changes in traditional education from the
introduction of computers and google classrooms. Computers are moving from desk top devices to mobile
systems enabling people to work remotely.
Summary
• The last 10 years we have seen a rapid change on how consumers use the
internet and how much power we have over what content we want to
read, share or where to shop
• Online shopping, social media and connected devices is normal in
consumers daily life and it is now the traditional way of shopping
• Consumers have more power and demand content at their fingertips that is
fast and safe using E-commerce where transaction go through safety
protocols
• Demands for faster internet speeds for video streaming using YouTube,
Netflix, Stan, Foxtel and more video channels are the increase
• To stay relevant, companies need to continue updating their content, and
key words, review their data and analyse changes

• The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. We have seen remarkable
improvements on the web since it was first introduced.
• Technology is so expansive and ever-changing and Over the last 10 years, we have seen a massive change to the Internet.
• There has been significant and continuing growth in social media – and includes Facebook, Twitter, Snap Chat, Instagram,
Blogs etc.
• Consumers want information and content at their fingertips and demand super-fast data speed. Dial internet was a thing
of the past. We now have cable and NBN.
• Today almost all households own an average of 3 devices and these devices include – Smart phones, tablets, laptops,
smart watches and Smart TV’s.

• When consumers go out to a restaurant, the theatre, travel and buy new things – photographs are taken with their smart
device and posts are uploaded on social media.
• Digital transformation has changed the way people shop.
• Traditionally shops had open and closing hours. Shopping online is available 24/7 allowing consumers to shop at their
convenience anywhere in the world. Consumers have more freedom online and can compare prices and read a reviews
and testimonials before making a purchase.
• Online shopping has become the norm for everyone. Online chats are becoming popular for the consumer to seek help at
a convenient time without picking up the phone and waiting on long queues
• Consumers are shopping online, browsing information sites, viewing social media accounts and streaming videos. The
most common devices used for browsing the internet is a smart phone, a tablet, a laptop and a smart TV.

• Popular shopping sites that consumers are browsing are for goods and services including – Internet providers, mobile
phones and plans, personal items such as clothing, shoes and accessories, internet banking, travel deals. You can buy
almost anything on the internet.
• Google promotes pages by ranking where useful content is shared using other sites, social media, blogs. Careful use of
keywords promotes page ranking
• E-Commerce is a safety measure allowing buying and selling of goods and service transactions to go through safety
protocols. This increases buyer and seller confidence online.
• The future will bring faster internet speeds allowing consumers to browse websites much faster.
• Viewing videos online and with the increase of Netflix, Stan, Foxtel, YouTube and other video streaming sites demands the
need for faster speeds.

• Consumers use of technology has seen a remarkable change in the last 10 years
• The future will bring about more change where consumers will demand faster internet speeds and reliance on video
streaming
• Online shopping is on the increase and more retailers will have an online presence. Goods and services online range from
retail items to products and services such as banking, ticket purchase. Consumers can buy anything online
• It is important that Website content needs to follow SEO using key words, so their pages rank highest in a Google search
• To stay relevant, companies need to continue updating their content, and key words, review their data and analyse
changes
