rapidly and impacted the way we go about our daily lives. Over the last 10 years,
we have seen a massive change in the Internet and in particular with the growth
in social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Blogs. We have seen remarkable
improvements on the web since it was first introduced in 1989

• Consumers and most households own an average of three devices. Mobile devices are
increasingly being used allowing people to stay in touch on social media, share
information and photos with friends and family and forums to engage in conversations.
Almost everybody is living two lives, an online life and a an offline life. Smartphones
bring together communities and with this comes the reliance on super fast data

• Digital transformation has changed the way that consumers shop,
make comparisons in the comfort of their own home, while in public
transport, in restaurants. Information is up to date and on hand when
required. Information is at their fingertips and they can simple share

• People search for information online by using their favourite browser and most
commonly typing in keyword into the search field. The most popular search
engines world wide are:
• Google.
• Bing.
• Yahoo.
• Ask.com.
• AOL.com.
• Baidu.
• Wolframalpha.
• DuckDuckGo.
Of those who bought presents from a mainly online retailer, 73 per cent used a
laptop while 19 per cent used a tablet and 14 per cent used a smartphone

Online shopping is on the rise and consumers can purchase any product or service. Some of the
examples of what consumers are purchasing are:

• Mobile phones and internet services
• Insurance for home, health, business and travel

• A study carried out online by Cisco has demonstrated that by 2020
consumers will be browsing video sites where internet traffic will be
account for 79% . HD and Ultra HD video streaming and virtual reality will
add to the rise of internet traffic. Consumers globally are demanding faster
broadband speeds and by 2020 speeds of up to 47.7Mbps
• Pay per view subscriptions has emerged as the major category of paid
online content in Australia and is on the increase globally
