  19. 19. Example 3: Panasonic’s smart shopping basket and Robotic Checkout System Panasonic is joining the race to automate grocery store checkouts. Just one week after Amazon unveiled its cashier-free convenience store, the Japan- based electronics maker today showed off its own solution with a checkout machine that can detect items in your shopping cart, tally the bill, and automatically bag those items. https://youtu.be/Hpp-3Ver7ig
  20. 20. Robotic Checkout System- RegiRobo Regirobo, invented by Panasonic and Lawson, basically does everything apart from choosing the goods you want to buy. It automatically calculates the bill and even bags the purchased goods. Meet "Regi Robo" — short for register robots — a new automated checkout system that scans and bags groceries, and was unveiled Monday by Japanese electronics giant Panasonic.
  21. 21. Robotic Checkout System- RegiRobo How it works? Regi Robo syncs to a computerized shopping basket with a bar code reader attached. Customers can scan merchandise to keep track of their purchases. The shopping basket has a sliding bottom, and when placed on Reji Robo the bottom opens. The items then gently drop into a plastic bag while the customers pay using cash or a card.
  22. 22. Robotic Checkout System- RegiRobo How smart basket works? Customers at the Osaka, Japan store get a sensor-equipped basket when they walk in, then choose items, scan the barcodes and place them in the “smart basket” at a dedicated checkout counter. The system then settles the transaction, the bottom of the basket opens and the items are placed into a plastic bag. It shows the total amount and item List as well.
  23. 23. Robotic Checkout System- RegiRobo Technology running smart baskets- RFID The ubiquitous Universal Product Code (UPC) bar code is replaced by smart labels, also called radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. RFID tags are intelligent bar codes that can talk to a networked system to track every product that you put in your shopping cart. Features of RFID Tags: • Exchanges data with a RFID reader through radio waves. • Process and store data. • Reading information from a RFID tag does not require line-of-sight(Like Barcodes) and can be performed over a distance of a few meters. • These tags can be attached to almost any object. • They do not require batteries and can operate 24/7 without risk of power loss.
  24. 24. Other Examples • Physical brands like Walmart will begin having more computerized highlights, similar to store maps. E.g. Target’s Store map. • Smartwatches could soon reveal to you when you're becoming ill. • Intel’s Virtual Footwear Wall 3D for Adidas.
  25. 25. Conclusion These future technologies are in their beta phase and has some drawbacks like: • Amazon Go cannot serve more than 20 customers at the moment in the store. • Amazon Dash buttons are only for prime members. • Panasonic smart baskets are still in the development process to work with RFID tags but for now the customers are scanning each item and placing it into the basket. Concluding, everything revolves around the Physical and Digital world thereby, We will see these emerging technologies in near future and it will bring a drastic change to our lifestyle.
