12. Smart decision makers focus more on Life Cycle Cost and less on price Thames Water cost measurements of their entire pumping operations over it’s lifetime
The dates shown mark a few of the milestones in Grundfos' product history.
Grundfos’ product range is constantly expanding – new products include digital dosage pumps, Grundfos Comfort and Magna, the CU301 control unit for SQ and MQ for private water supplies. Grundfos constantly brings new products or updated products to the market. Take advantage of the investments – it is already paid for!!!!
To achieve a closer connection between product development and our customers, Grundfos has set up a matrix organisation, where the customer segments are responsible for their respective products “from cradle to grave." Six business areas have been established: Domestic and Commercial Building Services, OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), IEM (Industrial End-User Market), Water Services and Wastewater.
The fact that pumping systems account for 20 - 25 % of the world’s electrical power consumption puts political focus on the topic. It is therefore a big political wish and incentive to support energy saving measures in connection with pump operation; both for environmental and economic reasons.
When measuring the Life Cycle Cost quite interesting results will often appear These tell the owner where to concentrate his efforts in order to reduce the total costs. Thames Water is one of the world’s largest water supply companies. Measurements from this company have shown that the price of the pump only constitutes 5% of the total life cycle costs of the pump. Maintenance is 10% and the rest, 85%, comes from operating costs. The conclusion is, therefore, that it is necessary to look at factors other than the purchase price when a new pump is to be bought. It has consequently become a trend for water utility companies to focus on cost of ownership for the individual pump or installation and compare with alternative solutions.
Over the last 10–15 years, Grundfos has not only focused on pump and motor efficiencies, but a constantly increasing amount of money has been spent on the development of electronic controls and communication equipment for pump operation. In this way, Grundfos has opened up a whole new world of possibilities for optimising pump operation and reduction of the customer’s Cost of Ownership. Resources are also dedicated to electronic auxiliary tools, e.g. multi-media programs and WinCAPS, which will often show customer benefits in a simple way and by means of which it is possible to calculate the savings. Calculations are often heavy and complex and therefore not always made.
Pumps with integrated electronics are kind to the environment as they adjust energy consumption to the current heat requirement – thus saving energy. "Minimal Cost of Ownership & Optimum Comfort”.
