We utilize the time series technique known as Toda-Yamamoto method, which efficiently works even with the variables co-integrated of an arbitrary order. Empirical findings suggest a unidirectional Granger causality running from urbanization to economic growth, and no Granger causality detected from economic growth to urbanization for the long run. The findings prove that urbanization is nominated as a main driving force of economic growth. Introduction In the human literature, one of the most significant key factors in the development process is urbanization (Bairoch, 1988). In fact, urbanization and development are regarded as two interrelated and interdependent processes that cannot take place without each other. In spite of having such dependent relationship, the causal link between these two variables has not been truly clarified (Jacobs, 1969). Urbanization is regarded as both result and cause for the economic development (Gallup et al., 1999). It was proved that the proportion of the urban population in the world had a 30-percent rise in 1950 and it was gradually increased up to 50 percent in 2010 (United Nations, 2007).

Barriers and Bridges to a Democratic Culture

The year 2014 was remarkable for the European Union with regards to how city-regional 'small nations' (Keating, 2014) engaged in democratic experimentation on the right to decide their future beyond their referential nation-states. Key examples include Scotland's and Catalonia's pursuits of independence from the United Kingdom and Spain, respectively. A similar situation occurred in the Basque Country as a consequence of the region increasingly overcoming the political violence that dominated the previous era. There, a democratic debate regarding devolution, constitutional change, independence, and new political relationship with nation-state Spain has arisen (Calzada & Bildarratz, 2015). Regardless the political outcomes, consequences, and meanings in the three aforementioned small nations, the differences in each case's political culture and history are noteworthy. Even more notable are their different means of accommodating a new strategic city-regional governance pathway (Herrschel, 2014) through implicit social innovation processes. Social innovation processes (Moulaert, 2013) depict the way in which stakeholders in a given city-regional small nation -such as political parties, social movements, corporate powers, and media, among others- are led in one direction or another as a whole. To what extent is the starting point of the devolution for each city-regional small nation similar according to its governance, history, and policies? What are the potential political scenarios for each city-regional small nation as a result of the de/recentralisation attitude of its referential nation-states? What are the most relevant strategic social innovation processes occurring in each case? This paper aims to benchmark how the Basque Country, Catalonia and Scotland are strategically moving forward beyond their referential nation-states in a diverse way by formulating devolution and even independence in unique terms, as a consequence of the dynamics between stakeholders in each location. Recent research on the impact of labor migration on the socioeconomic development of developing countries has provided opportunity to try and resolve some of the long-standing polemics that have pervaded the literature on migration and development. This article focuses on findings concerning the labor, remittance, and social impacts of emigration on countries that have participated in labor emigration. While a great deal more research needs to be done, recent findings confirm that in some situations the sort-term impacts of labor migration on sending countries have been considerable. In the study area (Titiheriya, Samserganja and Rajhena VDCs of Banke district, Western Nepal total 6272 young adults left “home” to work as migrants in the Gulf and Middle Eastern countries or in India. Random sample method has been used and selected 240 households (migrants) for the data collection. Better jobs with handsome earnings motivates them to migrate to Arabian and Indian cities to secure livelihoods. But at the same time migrants are not free of risks. The findings of this study have shown largely a positive outlook of migration in terms of livelihood security. This reflects the wider themes with respect to socio-economic determinants of access and opportunity. Regardless of whether migration is as accumulative process or coping strongly, most migrants receive little support and live in very difficult conditions at their destinations. Thus, a rights-based approach to guarantee the overall security of migrants is needed.

Under the same devolution regional trend though, many manifestations can be identified that remark their new relationship with their referential nation-states. This panel looks at the concept such as 'devolution', 'independence' and 'self determination' in order to find theoretical and policy-informed evidences in the European arena. Moreover, it looks into ways in which the phenomenon could be explained from different perspective such as, city-regionalism, comparative politics, urban and spatial planning, city diplomacy and social innovation, among others.

Conflict and political violence have for long been considered endemic features of Colombia’s contemporary history. The ongoing struggle in Colombia has developed into a multi-polar conflict, where the exercise of violence as a strategy to resolve social and political clashes, has resulted in a staggering number of internally displaced persons (IDPs). In 1993 Robin Kirk predicted: 'If current trends continue, there may be as many as 1.5 million desplazados [displaced] in Peru and Colombia by the year 2000' (Kirk, 1993:3). Despite an increased global attention, gender blindness on communities, and humanitarian programming, seems to persist (Leach cited in Otzelberger,2011:4; iDMC,2012:67). Understanding the uneven consequences of conflict on men and women, and identifying and challenge the channels that transmit them are crucial, for the development of gender-responsive policies, strategies and studies, which takes into consideration the socially determined roles, responsibilities and capabilities of women and men, as opposed to gender-blindness (Box 2). The situation of internal displacement in Colombia can be approached and analysed from a number of different perspectives. I have, however, decided to explore the impact of forced migration on men and women in Colombia, specifically the effects of it on gender roles. The main research question that I ask is: How and why - by the virtue of their gender – are men and women experiencing internal displacement differently in Colombia, and how is this reflected in the initial period of violence and resettlement process? This paper is organized as follows: Section one outlines the methodological foundation on which the paper is resting. Section two is split into two sub-sections. Sub-section one, advances a number of definitions of key concepts and formulates a normative framework. Sub-section two formulates a theoretical framework for the analysis, by among other things mapping relevant case studies. Section three presents an analysis of the gendered experience of migration in Colombia - utilizing qualitative as well as quantitative data. Finally, a conclusion - based on the findings from the analysis - will be provided.

Using individual data on voting and political parties manifestos in European countries, we empirically characterize the drivers of voting for populist parties (the demand side) as well as the presence of populist parties (the supply side). We show that the economic insecurity drivers of the demand of populism are significant, especially when considering the key interactions with turnout incentives, neglected in previous studies. Once turnout effects are taken into account, economic insecurity drives consensus to populist policies directly and through indirect negative effects on trust and attitudes towards immigrants. On the supply side, populist parties are more likely to emerge when countries are faced with a systemic crisis of economic security. The orientation choice of populist parties, i.e., whether they arise on left or right of the political spec- trum, is determined by the availability of political space. The typical mainstream parties response is to reduce the distance of their platform from that of successful populist entrants, amplifying the aggregate supply of populist policies.
