The World War One Historical Association Bay Area Chapter will hold a meeting on July 11, 2015 at San Jose State University. Historian Anthony Powell will present on "We Were Americans Too: The African American Officer and Enlisted Man during the Great War". Powell has over 30 years of experience studying and writing about African American soldiers, including Buffalo Soldiers. He will discuss the experiences of African American soldiers during World War 1 and bring rare exhibits. Refreshments will be provided and donations of $5 are suggested. Directions to Sweeney Hall on the SJSU campus are provided. The next chapter meeting on August 8 will feature a presentation on Gertrude Bell and World War 1 in the Middle East.

Anthony Powell
Historian Anthony Powell has spent over thirty years
studying, teaching, collecting and writing about the
American Buffalo Soldier. Among his many
accomplishments, he has curated exhibitions
including "The Buffalo Soldier" and "The African
American Soldier in the U.S. Army, 1866-1902."He has
lectured at dozens of universities and museums on
the subject of Black Military History, and is the author
of several books and numerous magazine articles. He
has provided historical consulting to Alex Haley and
the National Institute for the study of Race in the
Military, among others.
In addition to his presentation, Mr. Powell plans to
display rare museum exhibits featuring uniforms and
artifacts from the African-American experience.
