By 2022, 98% of IT executives expect predictive analytics and early detection notifications for life-threatening conditions will be sent to clinicians’ mobile devices. While tech plays a big part in how healthcare is transforming, there are 10 top trends set to disrupt the industry. See them in this must-see presentation.
3. Healthcare costs have been rising faster than the cost
of living for years and show no signs of slowing down.
Increases in drug prices and spending, the prevalence of
chronic diseases and expanded awareness of mental health
needs and services will all continue to drive costs upward.
To help offset costs, employers are taking proactive steps,
such as opening on-site clinics, implementing workplace
wellness programs and setting up their own provider
networks.
PwC’s Health Research Institute projects a
6% medical cost trend increase in 2020.1
40% of employees with a high-deductible
health plan would rather not have one.1
5. Customers expect their interactions with healthcare
companies to mirror the experiences they have with banks
and retailers. As a result, they are demanding greater
pricing transparency, convenience and more engaging
digital experiences.3
They want to be able to book an
appointment as easily as they can book a flight and order a
prescription as easily as they order their favorite products.
To meet growing expectations, healthcare providers are
working closely with technology companies, retailers and
other partners. Consumers can expect to see more user-
friendly patient portals, apps4
and other digital solutions
that help them manage their care.
Consumerism is the No. 2 challenge facing
healthcare executives in 2020, following
costs and transparency.
7. Today’s consumers use mobile apps for everything from
ordering food to booking trips. Most now prefer to use
apps to schedule appointments, view lab results and
request prescriptions, according to a recent consumer
survey by IoT company SOTI.
We can expect to see mobile devices reshaping the
healthcare environment in other ways too, including
clinicians using mobile devices in patient care, surgical
teams using electronic access during surgical events
(EASE) to send HIPPA-compliant messages to family
members and patients using wearable devices to relay
health information to physicians.6
57% of U.S. physicians offer a mobile app
to their patients.5
9. The use of HIPAA-compliant technology has
tremendous benefits for both patients and
physicians. Solutions like secure texting allow
patients to send messages directly to physicians.7
And Amazon recently announced six new Alexa
skills that will allow the transmission of protected
health information without violating patient privacy
rules. Patients of select providers can schedule
appointments, send and receive updates, check the
status of their prescriptions and more.8
11. Lack of transportation keeps 3.6 million Americans
from accessing healthcare each year.9
Healthcare
is a massive opportunity for on-demand
transportation companies like Lyft and Uber,
which have both begun providing patients with
free or affordable rides to non-emergency
medical appointments.10
13. Every patient has unique variables that impact their
health. Advancements in genomics and precision
medicine will make more personalized treatment
possible.11
Healthcare leaders will also use digital
technology to better understand patient ‘modes,’ or
mindsets that can impact their care—for instance,
whether or not they take their medication.12
15. 72% of Millennials are confused about their
health benefit options. They are twice as likely
as older generations to research providers on
review sites like Yelp.13
Providers are recognizing the need to adapt
their strategies to accommodate the needs of
each generation. That includes making cost
information more accessible to Millennials,
helping Gen Xers care for both children and
aging parents and helping Baby Boomers
navigate Medicare.
17. With competition from companies like Amazon—
which recently acquired PillPack for close to
$1 billion—pharmacies are finding new ways to
innovate. For instance, NowRx-online pharmacy
specializes in same-day, same-hour prescription
deliveries. Another company, Capsule, promises
to deliver medication to anyone in New York City
within two hours.14
18. AS THE POPULATION AGES,
DEMAND FOR HEALTHCARE
WORKERS CONTINUES
TO GROW
TREND 9
19. Healthcare and social assistance will add
3.4 million jobs by 2028.15
With people over age 65 accounting for 12% of the
global population by 2030,16
the healthcare industry
will continue to add jobs. And as the industry
moves toward team-based care, the fastest-growing
occupations are home health aides, personal care
aides, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and
medical assistants.
21. By 2022, 98% of IT executives expect predictive
analytics and early detection notification for life-
threatening conditions will be sent to clinicians’
mobile devices.17
As artificial intelligence makes data more powerful,
it will play a more significant role in diagnosis,
monitoring and care. Hospitals will invest in
innovative mobile technologies, such as remote
patient monitoring, dynamic workflows and real-
time location systems that track everything from
patients and staff to specimens, equipment and
operational efficiency.
