APPENDIX A: LEARNING THROUGH LIVING: HOW TO DO LAUNDRY
By eHow Fashion, Style & Personal Care Editor
Doing laundry is not that hard to do
Has a parent determined that it's time you did your own laundry? You'll soon discover it's a snap to get your clothes clean. Just sort and separate colors from whites and don't wash anything at hot temperatures if it might shrink. Everything else you need to know is below.
1. To do laundry, first sort your dirty clothes, making separate piles for whites, bright colors and darks. If you mix whites with colors in the wash, the colors may bleed onto and ruin your whites.
2. Use the measuring cap of the detergent bottle or the cup found in detergent boxes to measure out the right amount of laundry soap according to the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Pour the soap into your washer (pour over the clothes in the main compartment). Add liquid fabric softener, if desired, to the cup in the center of the washer.
4. Choose the water temperature for the wash cycle:hot, warm or cold; save on energy and opt for a cold rinse cycle for any load. Consult the labels on your clothes, your washing machine's instruction manual or the detergent container for recommendations on washing temperature. In general, use cold water to protect colors and darks from bleeding or fading, and to avoid shrinkage. Use warm or hot water for durable fabrics like cotton (make sure they're preshrunk), and to ensure that your whites stay white.
5. If you need to add bleach, allow the machine to run for a few minutes to mix the detergent and water, then add about a cup of bleach to the washer or the bleach dispenser.
6. Add your clothes, close the lid and let the machine do its dirty work. Washing takes approximately 45 minutes.
7. Put the clothes (and an anti-static sheet, if desired) in the dryer after the wash is complete.
8. Remove lint from the dryer's lint tray.
9. Select the correct drying temperature for your laundry load: low for delicates, medium for most fabrics and high for cotton. When in doubt, low or medium is the safest bet.
Page 13
10. Close and turn on the dryer. Expect the drying cycle to take an hour or more for a full load.
11. Once the clothes are completely dry, remove them from the dryer or drying rack and fold your clean laundry.
12. Clean out the lint tray for the next person.
NOTE: SHEETS SHOULD BE WASHED AT LEAST ONCE EVERY OTHER WEEK
IMPORTANT
DETERGENT & BLEACH GO HERE POUR ON TOP OF THE CLOTHES ONCE WATER FILLS UP.
DO NOT OVERLOAD WITH CLOTHES OR IT WILL NOT WORK & MAY DAMAGE MACHINE
ONLY LIQUID FABRIC SOFTENER GOES HERE

APPENDIX B: LEARNING THROUGH LIVING: HOW TO CLEAN YOUR DORM ROOM
Dorm rooms have to hold everything we need to make it through college. We push all of that into a tiny space, but finding a way to get it clean with all of our classes, study sessions, social events, and occasional visits home. Use this quick clean up to maintain your dorm room, or make a big difference in your messy room in only 15 minutes.
1. Make the bed. Taking a few moments to smooth out the bed and straighten the sheets and blankets will make a big difference in the look of your dorm room. Small one room living usually makes the bed a focal point. Make sure your bedding is simple enough to be easily made up when you're in a hurry.
2. Grab the trash. Whether it's crumpled up drafts of a history essay, or empty pizza boxes from breakfast, grabbing all of the trash out of your room will make a big difference. Grab a trash bag, and dump it all.
3. Contain the laundry. Stuff all of the dirty laundry into hampers or dirty clothes baskets. If your hampers are overflowing it may be time to schedule a laundry date. If you have a lot of clean laundry that hasn't been put away, neatly stack it on your bed to put away later. Before you can go to bed, you'll have to put away the laundry.
4. Use a basket to grab lost items. Put anything in the basket that needs to be filed, put away, returned to its owner, etc. Since your dorm room is small, this probably won't be a lot of stuff. If you're running low on time, don't worry about replacing the items now. If there are only a few, take the time now to put them away.
5. Wipe down surfaces. Use an all purpose cleaner and wipe down all of the washable surfaces with a paper towel or all purpose wipe. Don't worry about tough stuck on stuff, just quickly wipe down all of the surfaces.
6. Tackle the floor. Sweep or vacuum the floor, focusing only on the visible part of the floor. Put away the cleaning supplies and your clean dorm room is ready for visitors. . If there’s time, you can use a paper towel and an all purpose spray on any sticky or obvious spots on hard surface floors.
Tips:
1. If you don't seem to have room for all of your clothes, consider storing out of season clothes. Under the bed or the tops of closets can be a great space to store plastic containers full of clothes that will be needed later.
2. Make sure that you don't use all purpose cleaner on surfaces that are not washable. If in doubt, test it first in a hidden spot.
3. Don't worry about vacuuming under the bed or in hard to reach areas in a quick clean up. Just vacuum the main traffic areas.
Page 15
APPENDIX C: FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURES
1. In the event of a drill or actual fire, either the smoke detectors or fire alarm will sound.
2. Students are to exit the building, using the nearest fire exit, in an orderly fashion, staying low to avoid smoke inhalation.
3. In the event the fire alarm has not been activated, students should pull fire alarm closest to them as they exit the building. If the fire alarm has already been activated, there is no need to pull a second alarm. ***DO NOT DO THIS IN A DRILL***
4. Fire exit maps are located in the hallways on each floor. Students should familiarize themselves with their escape route as soon after arriving on campus as possible.
5. Upon exiting dorm rooms, students should close their door, reducing the spread and damage of the fire.
6. After exiting their dorm, students should meet in the assigned areas to be accounted for by Residential Life Staff. Under no circumstances should a student re-enter the building after exiting!
7. The following areas have been designated as the meeting points:
a. LINE UP AT THE APPROPRIATE NUMBERED DOOR NEAR THE GYM PARKING LOT
8. The Dean of Counseling and Residential Life will announce to the students when they may reenter the building.
9. In the event of an actual fire, no one may reenter the building unless they are cleared by the local Fire Department personnel!

  • 12. Page 12 APPENDIX A: LEARNING THROUGH LIVING: HOW TO DO LAUNDRY By eHow Fashion, Style & Personal Care Editor Doing laundry is not that hard to do Has a parent determined that it's time you did your own laundry?
  • 13. Page 13 10. Close and turn on the dryer. Expect the drying cycle to take an hour or more for a full load. 11. Once the clothes are completely dry, remove them from the dryer or drying rack and fold your clean laundry. 12. Clean out the lint tray for the next person. NOTE: SHEETS SHOULD BE WASHED AT LEAST ONCE EVERY OTHER WEEK IMPORTANT DETERGENT & BLEACH GO HERE POUR ON TOP OF THE CLOTHES ONCE WATER FILLS UP. DO NOT OVERLOAD WITH CLOTHES OR IT WILL NOT WORK & MAY DAMAGE MACHINE ONLY LIQUID FABRIC SOFTENER GOES HERE NOT DETERGENT or BLEACH
  • 14. Page 14 APPENDIX B: LEARNING THROUGH LIVING: HOW TO CLEAN YOUR DORM ROOM Dorm rooms have to hold everything we need to make it through college. Tips: 1.
  • 15. Page 15 APPENDIX C: FIRE EVACUATION PROCEDURES 1. ***DO NOT DO THIS IN A DRILL*** 4. 7.
