BOARD FOLLOW-UPS
Return from Break: Happy New Year! I trust you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday
season. Students and staff have returned, and are ready for the second semester. We had a
very smooth first week back including the opening of our four new Kindergarten classes. It’s
hard to believe that the year is half over.
Budget Meetings: As you know, two Community Budget Meetings will be held as follows:
Tuesday, January 22, 6:00 PM in Diamond Bar High School’s Theater, and Thursday, January
24, 6:00 PM in Walnut High School’s Theater. This information has been disseminated to all
schools, is posted on our website, and will be advertised on school marquees (see
attachment).
Board Meeting: Thank you for your participation on Wednesday evening.
Please be reminded that a Special Board Meeting, to discuss the
Superintendent Search, has been scheduled for Thursday, January 31, 6:00
PM at the home of Helen Hall. For your information, the attached letter was
sent to several search firms soliciting RFPs.
Congratulations to Castle Rock Elementary School honorees Jacqueline
Miranda (Super Star Student), and Cantrell Photography (Partner in Education).
Congratulations also to South Pointe Middle School honorees Angeleena Escamilla, and
Joseph Aguilar (Super Star Students), and Gordon Mize (Partner in Education).
GENERAL INFORMATION
Emergency Prep: Today, Friday, January 11, 2013, C.J. Morris Elementary School conducted
an emergency drill to rehearse an environmental hazard on campus scenario. Students and
staff were directed to enter or remain indoors for the duration of the drill. With lights out, doors
shut and locked, everyone was asked to remain quiet in order to listen for directions.
This 20-minute drill was CJM’s first step in preparing students for an actual lock-down drill
involving an intruder on campus. The emphasis was for students and staff to practice the
procedure of following directions, remaining calm and quiet, and quickly moving all students to
an inside space. CJM staff will be meeting to debrief this drill and to plan a follow-up drill with
the scenario of a stranger on campus. This drill was attended by and planned with consultation
from Deputy Ken Leyva of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Additionally, Assistant Superintendent Jeanette Ullrich is working with Walnut Sheriff’s
Substation Deputy Daly to provide him with each of our school site’s Emergency/Disaster Plan.
As you know, the safety of our students and staff has been, and will always be the highest
priority at every one of our schools. We will continue to be vigilant in our commitment to
ensure that our schools are safe.

Holiday: Please be reminded that the District Office and all schools will be closed on
Monday, January 21, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday. We will
resume normal business hours on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.
Emergency Prep/Sheriff’s Training: Diamond Bar High School will be the site of a Walnut
Sheriff’s Station Active Shooter Training on Tuesday, January 22, 7:00 AM. Principal
Catherine Real has sent several messages to the community to make them aware of the
training. Also, law enforcement units will have signs on them alerting the public to the training.
This is a collaborative effort between WVUSD and the Sheriff’s Department.
Cornerstone Awards: The annual Cornerstone Awards Gala is scheduled for Friday,
February 1 (see attached flier). The event will be held at the Pomona Valley Mining Company
beginning at 6:00 PM. Please contact Bertha (by Wednesday, January 23) regarding your
availability and inform her if you plan to take a guest. Tickets for Board Members will be held
at the door. Guest tickets are $25.
Mid-Year Goals: Our annual Mid-Year Goals Review will be held on Wednesday, February 6.
We will begin at 6:00 PM in the multipurpose room at Westhoff Elementary School.
Joint Meeting: As you know, the Board schedules a Joint Meeting with the Personnel
Commission annually. This year’s Joint Meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 20, and
will begin at 5:00 PM in the Staff Development Room. Dinner will be provided. Our Regular
Board Meeting will begin with Closed Session, at 6:00 PM, in my conference room.
Capitol News: The Association of Low Wealth Schools (ALWS) provided the attached update
regarding the Governor’s budget.

changes will realize some savings for the second semester.

Collegewood, and C.J. Morris Elementary Schools for the 2013/2014 school year.
