Using Libary of Congress Sources to Meet CCSS

  1. My objective ~ provide opportunities to find new resources and learn strategies for teaching to the Common Core State Standards; I hope to learn from you, too.
  2. Goals; check for familiarity with first three tools. Check for missing expectations.
  3. Sources in addition to, and not indexed by, teacher page resources. It is the LIBRARY of CONGRESS. Begin with look at WDL. French resources; LaFontaine Aesop p37.
  4. Glitchy. If working try Legislative process; if not, show active legislation

  6. Share Pinsky project video of Sloth, paired with new nonfiction Little Book of Sloth.
  7. Jefferson Building shown here is actually the smallest of the 3; but the most beautiful. The public showcase. Show Library Card.
  8. Show PD modules for self and staff, TPS Journal on CCSS plus archives.
  9. Teaching Channel. Engage, develop critical thinking, construct knowledge. Show clip. Stanford Beyond the Bubble
  10. Even with our elementary students, using primary sources will prepare them to think beyond the bubble with text. Start with maps, graphs, visual materials, e.g. photos, posters, maps, etchings and film.
  11. CCSS are accepted as standards by 45 States, D.C. and 4 territories. PARCC is the agency writing assessments for CCSS in NY and 21 other states. Engageny.org: Expeditionary Learning modules in intermediate grades; Module 1 on Gr5 focuses on close reading. [Murdoch’s Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium is writing assessments for states not in PARCC.
  12. TPS partners have resources to share for lessons and are worth exploring. Book backdrops is a favorite of mine – I added the work I did gathering primary sources to go with the Expeditionary Learning background knowledge lesson in Gr5 Module 1 human rights, Unit 2, Lesson 1. There is also a collection of resources that reference the California migrant culture in the 1930s, which is an essential element of the story setting for Experanza rising.
  13. Expand Results for Informational and Language Development shifts standards. Show and ask for input on search. Then show expansion issues. Practice opportunity. Several handouts on strategies I’ve learned from the Beta Network that might help you use what you find.

  17. First page of Look magazine article from 1946; 5th grade human rights [went from theme to baseball to exhibitions to jackierobinson and search on Branch Rickey. Teach close reading strategy. Practice opportunity.
  18. This tool is from a colleague from the TPS Network Beta who trains pre-service and practicing teachers through the TPS Center at UNC.
  19. Analysis tools come in PDF format for printing out and copying for student work. [these can be edited with questions by you to guide your students’ thinking] Also the online tool is great for independent work to send to instructor, printout for discussion and later handing in; or group work. Let’s try it out.

  21. The network came about as a result of input from the TPS Mentor Advisory Committee, and is being operated by Metro-State U in Colorado. Mentors started in July 2012, and others began to come on board from TPS affiliates as the year progressed. Beta Testing continues through December, and release is slated for January, 2014.
  22. After checking your email for the confirmation link, when you click on it you will be taken to your profile page. Fill in your basics, and consider what you want to include about yourself and your hobbies and interests later. Recent activity only covers your comments and postings. This is where to go to get updates when you’ve been away awhile.
  23. When you register, you will automatically become part of 4 basic communities. There are videos on the Getting Started with the TPS Network page to help you learn how to do things we don’t cover here. Also, I am always an email away and willing to help, as is the Network Help Forum at the bottom right of that page, and I am always available to you by email.
  24. Since this workshop was about using primary sources to meet CCSS, I assume you also may be interested in these communities. I have learned a lot from them. Please join one of these. Post the primary source you found in your search to one of the communities. You can share how you intend to use it, ask for advice as to how to use it.
