Ehsan Dulloo, Bioversity International Conservation and Availability Programme Leader, presented at the international conference Enhanced genepool utilization - Capturing wild relative and landrace diversity for crop improvement, in Cambridge, UK, 16-20 June 2014. It is said that “you can't manage what you don't measure”. The unprecedented global loss of agricultural species, varieties and associated traditional knowledge is of increasing concern, threatening the provisioning, regulatory, supporting and cultural ecosystem services of importance to the livelihoods of the poor as well as the welfare of broader society. Such services include such public goods as maintaining agroecosystem resilience and future option values. Unfortunately, although many crop genetic resources (CGR) are widely recognized as being threatened, there is only limited information available regarding actual status. Only isolated efforts at monitoring have been undertaken. Conventional monitoring efforts, where they exist at all, have been subject to limitations due to ad hoc approaches that lack rigorous survey and sampling approaches, do not adequately account for search effort costs or systematically involve the participation of local-level actors, and are usually based on collections instead of direct observations in the field. Furthermore, the links between specific CGR conservation levels/configurations and the provision of specific ecosystem services are poorly understood. There is thus an urgent need for the development of a systematic approach to the monitoring of CGR. This presentation draws on the outcome of a recent Bioversity International/CIP international expert workshop aimed at the development of such an approach. The proposed multi-scale approach builds on a wide range of existing monitoring experiences and a review of the literature related to agricultural biodiversity-relevant ecosystem services. A number of proposed indicators that could be used to assess CGR threat levels, be used for monitoring purposes and/or assist in evaluating ecosystem service public/private good trade-offs arising from agricultural intensification are presented, with a view to supporting the potential for prioritizing, designing and implementing on-farm/in situ conservation measures that actively involve farmers, support livelihoods, complement existing ex situ conservation efforts and facilitate access and benefit sharing. Find out more about Bioversity International work on conserving crop diversity on the farm and in the wild http://www.bioversityinternational.org/research-portfolio/conservation-of-crop-diversity/

Smallholder potato farmers in Tanzania use different on farm risk management strategies to boost potato enterprise performance. However, knowledge on how on farm risk management strategies boost potato enterprise performance remains undocumented and scarce. Therefore, this study uses cross sectional data collected from 384 potato smallholder farmers in 2019, to first identify various on farm risk management strategies and then to determine the effect of risk management strategies on potato enterprise performance. Data is analysed by use of content analysis and descriptive statistics. Further, a multiple regression model is used to determine the effect of risk management strategies’ attributes on potato enterprise performance. First, more and effective risk management strategies such as the use of irrigation system, fungicides, accessing marketing information should be employed to boost potato enterprise performance in Tanzania. Second, since, the cost of risk management strategies had improved potato enterprise performance among smallholder farmers in Tanzania. However, the cost of employing risk management strategies is higher than the benefit potato smallholders get as a result of the strategies employed. The high costs had resulted from employing risk management strategies such as the purchase of irrigation systems during low rainfall and frost bites. Hence, potato smallholder farmers through public private partnerships between Lusitu Agribusiness Group and Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank TADB should establish a village hiring irrigation to dramatically reduce the costs associated with risk management strategies such as irrigation. This research paper was for the Environmental Studies 400 capstone class at Central Michigan University. In this paper, I strive to understand why industrial agriculture is so unsustainable, what is being done to reach a more sustainable system, and whether or not these strives in sustainability are effective. This research project allowed me to develop my interest in the agriculture industry and learn more about this field. Coupled with a presentation to faculty members and students of the Environmental Studies program, this project allowed me to practice my research and communication skills through a topic that deeply interested me.

Farmers necessitate vast information to sustain their farmhouse activities. Information is required not just on better and best practices & advanced technologies for production of crop which is gained through Green Revolution but as well information about post harvest perspectives including handling, processing, promoting, storage & marketing. Farmers need access to convenient, firm, and pertinent information that can support intricacy inside which their farm activities work. Even though farming expansion today has a wide array, this survey demonstrates that in spite of pluralistic augmentation methods in India, the scope & utilization of the said services are constrained. The purpose of this paper is to analyze rural extension programs in of general society, private and third parts in India. The paper investigates; fundamentals of extension, significance of rural extension, agribusiness extension methodologies in India, general difficulties and limitations of agricultural extension

This publication is the result of a research collaboration between Bioversity International and the Fundación para la Promoción e Investigación de Productos Andinos (PROINPA). It deals with issues regarding on-farm conservation of agrobiodiversity, which is a poorly addressed field of research in spite of its pivotal role in the maintenance of global crop diversity. Strategic actors in on-farm conservation are those farmers who, for various reasons, distinguish themselves from others by their contribution to conserving crop diversity. We call them ‘custodian famers’, even though the terminology may not be suitable to all social contexts. Understanding who these custodian farmers are, their presence over the territory, the types of crops they maintain, why and how, as well as gaining insights on the cultural, social and economic drivers behind their efforts is, for scientists, a very important step in devising effective on-farm conservation strategies and this booklet is a contribution in that direction. The open-ended interviews and participant observation methodologies provided in this study are helpful in guiding future methodological approaches and advancing our understanding of how the roles of custodian farmers can be better recognized, harnessed and supported by society. This work has been carried out in the framework of a major global UN Project supported by IFAD and the European Commission, which is focusing on the development of innovative participatory approaches for the conservation of neglected and underutilized species (NUS) on farm.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

However, amidst the glitz and glamour, the emirate faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, disrupting normalcy and posing unique challenges to its infrastructure. Among the critical nodes in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a vital hub connecting the world. This article delves into the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.
