Wave of Violence 1970 -71
January 16, 1970 – prison guard was thrown from the
third tier at Soledad in retaliation for the shooting deaths
of three inmates a few days earlier
1970 – 1971 – three additional guards were stabbed to
death at Soledad by inmates
Another officer stabbed while guarding witnesses to
Soledad officer’s murder
August 21, 1971 three guards and three inmates,
including George Jackson, were killed at San Quentin
during aborted escape attempt.
