3. The Schlieffen Plan
 Germany declared war Russia, Aug. 1, 1914
 Gen. Alfred Von Schlieffen created the
Schlieffen Plan, this plan of mobilization called
for a two front war against France and Russia
 This plan called for a small holding action
against Russia, while the main army would
carry out a rapid invasion of France through
Belgium
 Aug. 3rd, 1914 Germany declared war on
France
 This helped fulfill the two front plan where
Germany would fight on two fronts.

 Government Propaganda–
ideas spread to influence
public opinion for or against
a cause
 Propaganda helped people
in the Entente to realize
how bad Germany was.
 No one involved with World
War I had any idea of the
magnitude of destruction
this war would bring and
they thought it would end in
a few months.

5. The Western Front
 Germany hopes for a quick end to the war rested on The
Schlieffen Plan
 Plan of War called for fighting to take place on two fronts:
The East and West
 Called for a vast circling movement through Belgium into
Northern France on the Western Front
 Called for a small holding action of Russia on the East, until
France was knocked out.
 Unsuccessful in attempt to reach France

6. The
Western
Front
Trench Warfare had begun. The
trenches stretched from the English
Channel nearly to the Swiss Border.
Germany swept through The War had turned into a stalemate
Belgium and was
stopped short of Paris
at The Battle of
Marne, Sept. 1914
where taxi cabs took
the French to the front
lines.
In 10 months at Verdun, France, in
1916 lost 700,000 men over a few
miles of land

7. The Eastern Front
 Germans mobilizes against Russia and quickly wipes out
the Czars forces.
 Much more mobile, but the cost of lives was
enormous

9. Aftermath of Russian Defeat
