Linear Functions WebQuest
1. Linear Functions WebQuest
Introduction: Imagine yourself living in the 1800s when mathematicians are on the brink of
discovering linear functions. So many times we dislike those who “made up”
different equations because they are difficult to learn and understand. The entire
mindset throughout this activity is witnessing the discovery of linear functions
and equations for the first time.
Task: In this WebQuest you are a math apprentice in 1843 recording the discovering of linear
functions. Your successor is Sir William Rowan Hamilton and you need to conduct
research on him, his process of his discovery, and the expansion of linear functions to
other mathematical situations. Anything math related should be included in your
recordings and your interpreted reactions to these discoveries.
Process:
1. Sir William Rowan Hamilton: Research the founder of linear functions along with his
credibility. Include all relevant information into your report.

2. Linear Functions: Examine the articles and record the importance of linear functions
and how Sir William Rowan Hamilton came to discover them.

3. Expansion of Linear Functions: Investigate from these sites how the discovery of linear
functions led to more complex types of linear problems and easier ways to solve the
complex problems. All of your findings should be included in your report.

4. Interpreted Reaction of the Discovery: Since your writings should be as the discovery
is happening, you should also include reactions of Sir William Rowan Hamilton and
others to his monumental findings for the school of mathematics.
Evaluation: The evaluation is conducted by the depth of thought, consideration, and
thoroughness in the report. The report must correctly identify the discovery of linear
functions as if it were just happening in 1843. The rubric below will lead you
demonstrate what I will be looking for in the reports and the amount of depth that
should be taken into your writings.
2. Total Score: 20-80
Conclusion: By the end of this WebQuest, I hope that your understanding of the discovery of
linear functions and its relativity to the expansion of mathematics is more
prominent and why it is implemented into our curriculum. I also hope that putting
your mind back into the beginning of its finding, 1843, that others found it useful
and easier to solve many other problems.
