Teaching & learning approaches

Lecture with visual facilitation
Strengths
• Effective way of covering a large
amount of information.
• Ideal for large groups
• Can be used with a wide range
of visual facilitation tools e.g.
whiteboard, PowerPoint, videos,
flipchart.
Limitations
• Quality depends on skills of the
trainer e.g. voice projection.
• Learners are passive and may
not learn from just listening to
the trainer.
• Not well suited for delivering,
complex, abstract materil.
Ice-breaker
Strengths
• Effective way of introducing
course participants to each
other & to the facilitator (s)..
• Enable adults to feel more at
ease, morecomfortable sharing
their experiences with each
other.
• Can be used to transition to a
new topic in the session.
Limitations
• Some learners may not want to
take part.
• May not be inclusive especially if
it is a kinetic exercise or
energiser.
• If not facilitated properly may be
boring or reduce group cohesion
Case Study
Strengths
• Bridge the gap between theory
and practice, between the
training and the workplace
• Can be used for individual or for
group work.
• Can utilise course participants’
experience and existing
knowledge
Limitations
• Can be more time consuming
than other teaching methods
• Some participants may not see
the case study as relevant to
their work or situation.
• May not be enough experience
in the room to generate
solutions or discussion around
the case study.
Buzz Groups
Strengths
• Enables course particicipants to
interact with each other.
• Doesn’t require formal
feedback.
• Some learners are more
comfortable contributing to a
small group discussion, rather
than a whole class discussion.
Limitations
• Learners may go “off-topic”.
• Checking that individual learning
has taken place is difficult,
especially with a large number
of learners.
• A few leaners may dominate the
discussion
Video/DVD/online recording
Strengths
• Suits younger course attendees
and those with visual learning
preferences.
• Can be given the link to watch
the session again, outside of the
training room.
• Ideal for a large group
Limitations
• Requires effective facilitation of
a follow-up discussion.
• Can raise a large number of
questions or issues that cannot
be covered in the time available
for discussion.
• Can be technical issues access an
online video especially of
delivering the training off-site.
Brainstorming
Strengths
• Can be trainer led or learner led.
• Builds on existing knowledge
and experience of learners.
Limitations
• Some learners might be
overpowering and dismiss the
contributions of others
• Some lerners

Lecture with visual facilitation Strengths • Effective way of covering a large amount of information. • Ideal for large groups • Can be used with a wide range of visual facilitation tools e.g. whiteboard, PowerPoint, videos, flipchart. Limitations • Quality depends on skills of the trainer e.g. voice projection. • Learners are passive and may not learn from just listening to the trainer. • Not well suited for delivering, complex, abstract materil.

Ice-breaker Strengths • Effective way of introducing course participants to each other & to the facilitator (s).. • Enable adults to feel more at ease, morecomfortable sharing their experiences with each other. • Can be used to transition to a new topic in the session. Limitations • Some learners may not want to take part. • May not be inclusive especially if it is a kinetic exercise or energiser. • If not facilitated properly may be boring or reduce group cohesion

Case Study Strengths • Bridge the gap between theory and practice, between the training and the workplace • Can be used for individual or for group work. • Can utilise course participants’ experience and existing knowledge Limitations • Can be more time consuming than other teaching methods • Some participants may not see the case study as relevant to their work or situation. • May not be enough experience in the room to generate solutions or discussion around the case study.

Buzz Groups Strengths • Enables course particicipants to interact with each other. • Doesn’t require formal feedback. • Some learners are more comfortable contributing to a small group discussion, rather than a whole class discussion. Limitations • Learners may go “off-topic”. • Checking that individual learning has taken place is difficult, especially with a large number of learners. • A few leaners may dominate the discussion

Video/DVD/online recording Strengths • Suits younger course attendees and those with visual learning preferences. • Can be given the link to watch the session again, outside of the training room. • Ideal for a large group Limitations • Requires effective facilitation of a follow-up discussion. • Can raise a large number of questions or issues that cannot be covered in the time available for discussion. • Can be technical issues access an online video especially of delivering the training off-site.

This model dates back to Medieval Ages representing an oral tradition in contrast to providing information in print or other media. Trainers can include visual supports for lectures including a whiteboard, black board or flip chart and slides. Strengths & Limitations - Ask group to brainstorm these and feedback
