Technology
In 2018, there have been an average of one school
shooting a week so far. One as close as Savannah, GA. A
few years ago it happened here in Atlanta, GA. This is not
a good thing but it is something we must be aware of.
How can we prevent school shootings or how can we be
safe if it faced us?
How do the innovations of technology play a role in keeping
society safe?
What can be your contribution? Your challenge is to develop a
piece of technology that can help keep us safe in the event there is
violence at our schools.
• You must design and build a device.
• Your design must include an electrical
circuit.
• You must follow the Engineering
Design Process
• You must include a cost analysis of
your device
• How much will it cost to make it?
• A market price for your device
• A profit margin
• You must present your device,
presentation must include:
• A picture or blue print of your device.
• A written explanation of how your
device work and how will it keep us
safe.
• A cost analysis
For this challenge you will be
may specialize in one of the millions of products that
make or use electricity, like cell phones, electric motors and security
systems.
To be an you will need a bachelor’s degree and
sometimes an advance degree.
Most work in office buildings, laboratories,
work sites or industrial plants. As an , you can
make up to $94,000 annually.
• Choose your jobs
• Team Captain: Manages the project.
• Materials Manager: Requests the materials from the teacher.
• Time Keeper: Keeps the group on task so the project can be done by
project day.
• Scribe/Illustrator: Completes the final Engineering Design Brief.
• Reporter: Will be responsible for explaining your project.
• Ask yourself: What is the problem?
• We have been asked to make a contribution to school safety.
• What are you being to do?
• Our solution is to design a technological device that can keep us safe in
the event there is violence at our schools.
• What are your constraints (or limitations?)
• We must design and build a device. Our design must include
an electrical circuit. We must follow the Engineering Design
Process. We must include a cost analysis of our device: How
much will it cost to make it; a market price for our device; and a
profit margin. We must make a creative way to present our
device and the presentation must include: a picture or blue
print of our device; a written explanation of how our device
work and how will it keep us safe, and our cost analysis.
• Do your research!
• Research some designs. What features do they have? How can you
improve those features for your device?
• What are some solutions? Brainstorm some ideas with your
team.
• Come up with two different designs for your device.
• Choose the best one!
• Draw a diagram
• Draw a picture of how you want your final design to look.
• List your materials
• What materials will you need to make a prototype?
• Plan the steps you will take to get your solution
• Make a list of EVERYONE’s responsibilities in your group. Who does
what? So when you get your materials everyone will know what they are
doing.
•Follow your plan
• Make adjustments as needed
•Create a product
•Test it
• Does it look like you planned.
• Did it work?
• If it doesn’t look like what you imagined, make some
improvements.
• How can you make it better?
• Modify your design.
• Find a creative way to present your device. Remember
your constraints.
• The presentation must include:
• A picture or blue print of your device.
• A written explanation of how your device work and how will it keep us
safe.
• A cost analysis
• Explain your results.
• Write your presentation up for people to read.
