June Happy Hour
On June 13, the Westside
Network came together for
another fun evening of
mingling at the Brick &
Mortar in Santa Monica. Our
happy hours are held once
every 3-4 months. It’s great
way to connect with other
Westside Bruins in a relaxed
environment. We are cooking
up another summer happy
hour and hope you will make
it out to the next one!

Reading to
Kids Event!
On June 8, the Westside
Network teamed up with the
Reading to Kids Foundation
for Reading to Kids monthly
Reading Club at Alta Loma
Elementary School.
Reading to Kids is a grass-
roots organization dedicated
to inspiring underserved
children with a love of
reading. They coordinate
reading clubs at elementary
schools in downtown Los
Angeles where volunteers
read aloud to children and
create arts and crafts projects
about the stories they read.
Each child receives a book to
take home and the books that
are read to the children are
donated to the school’s
library. Reading aloud to
children imparts a love of
books that leads to improve
literacy, a more successful
education, and to a brighter
future.
Members who attended this
event included Elissa Frank,
Nevra Shapiro and Co-
President Christie Asselin,
pictured on the right. Elisa
and Nevra read The Amazing
Adventures Of Bumble Bee
Boy to a first grade class
while Christie read Captain
Raptor And The Moon Mystery
to a second grade class. After
reading the books, the
students made masks just like
Bumble Bee Boy’s mask. They
also created cartoons of
Captain Raptor’s next
adventure.
El Cholo kindly supplied
complimentary appetizers,
which made for a great
opportunity to meet the other
volunteers.
Thanks to the volunteers who
made it to this event. We will
be organizing another
Reading to Kids event this
fall. Stay tuned for details.
