OER use: Where, what, when, how and most of all WHY?
1. OER use: who, what, where, how andmost of all WHY? Chris Pegler IET, Open University By: Mickipediahttp://www.flickr.com/photos/redcarpet/266592978/
2. Where am I coming from? Promise Practice What we think/say OER will offer Where we find out what OER offers By: Perpetualplum http://www.flickr.com/photos/perpetualplum/3729882822/ ORIOLE PROJECT
3. How can you discover and select material? Describe fully + consistently with metadata Automated impersonal reuse with RLO! The long OER journey: As I see it Let’s automate as much as possible Problems obtaining metadata Found something. Can I use it? Can I repurpose it? Open content/OER: ‘a learning object plus an open licence’ (Wiley, 2009) We need something like an ‘open license’
4. Open Resources:Influence on Learners and Educators(ORIOLE) By: Perpetualplum http://www.flickr.com/photos/perpetualplum/3729882822/ National Teaching Fellowship Project ORIOLE Team: Chris Pegler (OU), Allison Littlejohn (Glasgow Caledonian), Patrick McAndrew(OU), Helen Beethamand Lou McGill (eLearning consultants), Isobel Falconer (GlasCal + OU) ++ ORIOLE PROJECT
6. Whoare the users? Are we talking suppliers or demanders? Are the users the educators(who release/reuse OER) or the learners(who release/use OER)? Are the ‘users’ outside the education system altogether (outsiders/informal learners)? Leading to questions about …
8. What is OER use? Using it in learning and teaching by linking to it? Using it as optional orcoreeducational content? Using it as publicity(the showcase or student sampler model) Little OER or big OER use – which is more used/useful/sustainable? (Weller, OpenEd 2010) Leading to questions about …
10. Whereis OER use happening? Conventionalcourses or experimentalones? Locallyor nationally or internationally? Within formal systems (e.g. VLE-local) or spread across the internet (i.e. linking out) Leading to questions about …
12. Howis OER use happening? Onlineor online reformatted as offline? Downloadinga resource or simply lookingat one? Use, reuse, repurposing or versioning? Leading to questions about …
14. When is OER use happening? When its mandatedor when its voluntary? When the educators are new to the job? When content is ‘ready to show’ or when its work-in-progress (ready-to-share)? Is it everyday or special occasion only? Is lack of time an influence, or an excuse, or both? FINALLY, leading to questions about …
16. Whyuse OER? My research into reuse suggests 3 sets of factors technical, quality and motivational (Pegler, OER10 2010). This suggests at least 8 different motives for OER use: Reward/Requirement:Payment made or targets met. Reputation: Recognition or showcasing beyond the usual audience. Review:Obtaining comments, reviews and feedback Reach: Access to resources which would not otherwise be available Research: Curiosity about OER as new, novel and untested area Right thing to do: driven by personal/institutional altruism/mission Renewal: As part of academic practice/educational development Resourcing: Urgency/other constraints preventing new creation
