Learn how to improve your handwriting skills in 4 rather basic steps. Some that may seem obvious but utilising them all, really helped me to train myself to write better after two different sets of injuries.

MY FIRST PIECE OF
ADVICE
Get a dedicated notebook or
sketchbook for practising
your lettering. I have used a
grid notebook, 1 cm squares I
think so it’s possible to define
the shapes without having to
rule lines every time I want to
create a letter.
If you’re not comfortable and if
you’re not holding a pen
properly then it can affect your
handwriting.
WHEN I SAY HOLDING A PEN
PROPERLY, I DON’T MEAN
GRIP IT LIKE IT’S A WEAPON.
ARE YOU SITTING
COMFORTABLY?
HOLDING YOUR PEN
Find a comfortable way to hold
your pen or pencil but don’t
squeeze it.
As long as you can write a
letter comfortably, it shouldn’t
matter which fingers you use
to grip your pen.
3. THE PEN’S THE THING!
THE RIGHT PEN MAKES A
HUGE DIFFERENCE TO MY
HANDWRITING
YOU SHOULD EXPERIMENT (THE PERFECT EXCUSE
TO BUY MORE PENS)

6. 1. EXPERIMENT
Once you find a writing utensil you
like, you can then start to experiment
and play with different-sized nibs and
thicknesses, as well as colours! Yay! I
discovered that my favourite pens are
Muji ink pens 0.35.
7. TOP TIP
Take a little notebook into your
favourite stationery store and play
with all the tester pens that are there.
You can refuse to leave, sure you
won’t be allowed back in the store
but you’ll be certain about which
pens you want.
Seriously though, that’s why tester
pens exist. So go crazy!
8. 2.START SMALL
Begin writing each letter of the
alphabet, slowly and thoughtfully
into the individual squares of your
notebook (if they’re large enough).
You will be able to see quite quickly
which letters you can draw well and
which need a little work and a bit
more care.
Doodle some shapes, which will act
as a warm-up exercise. Like a tiny
little workout .
9. 3.PRACTICE
Finding phrases like 'The Quick Brown Fox
Jumps Over The Lazy Dog' is a great way to
practice handwriting.
You can always write song lyrics, poems or
quotes.
The image to the right are movement drill
exercises for cursive handwriting but you can
also practice basic strokes.
11. 4.HOMEWORK
Practice the movement drills
shown in the previous slide.
Then you should practice more.
After that, some more practice and
then
Draw the alphabet again and find
which letters need work.
Work on those letters by repeating
the corresponding actions. So if
your O’s aren’t right, you have a lot
of O’s to write and write, again and
again.
