Artist: Julian Clavijo Title: HUMAN DISINTEGRATION Medium: Wood and acrilyc paint Size: 300cm x 275cm Art description: "This artwork was created with the purpose of transmitting the fragility of a human being represented by the portrait of a real child holding a bullet belt. This brings back to children around the world suffering from corruption, violence, wars and starvation. The fragility and innocence of a child against the poison of war are shown together, representing how humanity is being disintegrated by the armed and the power domination by unfaithful politics" 3045 wood cubes individually placed and painted as pixels, are the essence of the work. Every single cube was cut, painted and crafted by the artist. Each cube plays a roll as individual separated from the ones around, giving the overall notion of disintegration. This way, the viewer at floor level can barely realize what is the artwork about but can see in detail the materialization of it. On the other hand, watched from above, the viewer has the chance to encounter from the distance what is the whole image about in detail. The act of the viewer being above the artwork to be able to look at it becomes an implicit message of the work Artist bio: Julian Clavijo is currently a post-graduate candidate at RMIT University. His field of study is Art in Public Space . A committed object maker, Julian has focused his research through the practice of material engagement. He has explored urban space and transformation through a practical study of pattern and colour shift in the changing city.

Artist: Cara-Ann Simpson Title: Melbourne sonic skyline: Studley Park Rd Medium: ink infused metal Size: 32.5 x 65 cm Art description: This artwork depicts the night skyline of Melbourne City from Studley Park Road, Kew - just over the Johnston Street Bridge, Abbotsford. In the foreground is a spectral analysis of a soundwave from recordings taken on Johnston St, Abbotsford. By incorporating a visual analysis of sound recordings from the area I am presenting works that encompass the physical space as both a visual representation and an aural analysis. Artist bio: Cara-Ann Simpson (b. 1985) is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on sculpture, sound, space and the participant. Cara-Ann is concerned with modes of listening/hearing in social situations and how people interact with sound. In 2010, Cara-Ann received an ArtStart grant from the Australia Council for the Arts to attend the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME2010, Singapore) where she presented a paper with collaborator Eva Cheng (research engineer) on an interactive sound installation. The Janet Holmes á Court Artists' Grant Scheme supported the development of this installation in 2009, and Cara-Ann was subsequently featured in Real Time Magazine's online Studio section. She graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts First Class Honours from the University of Southern Queensland in 2008, and received the University of Southern Queensland Faculty of Art - Visual Arts medal in 2007. Simpson was the recipient of the Hobday and Hingston Bursary from the Queensland Art Gallery in 2007 for being the most promising undergraduate student from a Queensland tertiary art course. Cara-Ann also received the Asia-Pacific Golden Key International Honours Society Visual & Performing Arts Sculpture Award (2008), and was short-listed in the Wilson HTM National Art Prize (2009), and Agendo (2009). Simpson has had a number of solo exhibitions, sound releases and been involved in numerous performances and group shows within Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates. Cara-Ann is the 2011-2012 Electrofringe Co-Producer (annual electronic arts festival and year-round programming), and is currently working on several collaborative and solo projects in Melbourne, Australia.

Artist: Cara-Ann Simpson Title: Sonic Architecture #1 Medium: acrylic on MDF Size: 45.0 x 90.0cm Art description: This painting is from a body of work about Bundoora Homestead - a historic house (turned contemporary art gallery and cafe) in Bundoora, Melbourne. The painting depicts a singular moment in time taken from phase analyses of recordings of the site. The phase analyses has been reduced into a linear reference that is chiseled into the surface of the artwork forming shadows within the pictorial plane. Artist bio: Cara-Ann Simpson (b. 1985) is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on sculpture, sound, space and the participant. Artist: Cara-Ann Simpson Title: Merri Creek construction Medium: ink infused metal Size: 67 x 100 cm Art description: This work uses a photograph of the Merri Creek near where it meets the Yarra River in the Yarra Bend Park, Abbotsford. This site is significant to the Wurundjeri people and was a location for large gatherings; it is also a potential site for one of the earliest land treaties between Indigenous Australians and European settlers, as well as the site of the Merri Creek Aboriginal School and Assistant Protector William Thomas' hut. Within this artwork it is apparent that there has been great change to the site since European settlement with the footbridge in the background, as well as the Eastern Freeway, signage, and a road depicted. I am interested in the integration of architectural structures within the environment and am particularly drawn to this site due to the aesthetic appeal of the joining of the artificial and natural. The work also integrates a visual representation of sound from the area - this sound sample is of current construction (Feb-April 2011) as well as the ever present rumble of both the river and the traffic over the freeway. A temporary office and two cranes are apparent in the background of the artwork. Artist bio: Cara-Ann Simpson (b. 1985) is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on sculpture, sound, space and the participant. Cara-Ann is concerned with modes of listening/hearing in social situations and how people interact with sound. Artist: David-Ashley Kerr Title: I hear the River Medium: Lighjet Print Size: 80 x 140 cm Art description: Conceived with both time and place in consideration, this image attempts to engage in memory the sensory element of audible sound, to situate the viewer within the perspective of the lone subject. The lone subject lingers in a void between the experience and a response to their environment. These continuous visual planes that represent vast environments allude to the timelessness of nature, in my attempt to consolidate both contemporary and historical time, to then allow the placing of a subject to become an entirely active study into man and site, culture and environment. Artist bio: David-Ashley Kerr is a visual artist working in photomedia, primarily with large-format photography. He completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Art at Deakin University [2009] and a Master of Fine Art at RMIT University [2010]. My process for painting portraits is multi-layered. I first take photograph of the subject, then use waxy, coloured penciled to colour in an A4 black and white photocopy of the image with my desired colours. I use this finished peice as a reference for making a large scale oil painting. Although I always change the colours from their original in my paintings, I try to keep an absolute photorealistic approach to the rest of the piece Artist bio: Brittany Jones graduated Suma Cum Laude from Florida State University with a Bachelor's in Studio Art. At the age of twelve I went to Africa with my family for 4 months and became aware of the suffering around us and was inspired to create images displaying poverty and the suffering of others around us, my goal was to make this aware to the more fortunate people in our modern society. My drawing "Hungry" was accepted into an art gallery in New Port, at the age of 16 I started to play tropical instruments such as the ukulele, the conga drum and electric jazz Guitar. I realized I got the same peace and felling at playing music as I did with my Art and wanted to do both. I became inspired by the work of David Garibaldi and started to use my music as a motivation to create and now I want others to see and feel my work the way i did. Currently I'm studying at CAE doing an Visual Arts Certificate 3 and hoping to make my work publicized in the feature.

Artist: Liz Lacey Title: Tribal City 1 Medium: acrylic paint and collage on canvas Size: 1200 x 900 cm Art description: A series of paintings whose images unsettle the viewer with the convergence of binary opposites. An exploration of who and what determines identity is at the core of these works, confronting us with the tribe vs the individual, non-western civilisation vs. western civilisation and social restraint vs. personal responsibility. Artist bio: I am a Melbourne based emerging artist who engages in teaching and practise of art. I gained my Bachelor of Education (Art and Craft) @ Melbourne University, completing major studies in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, woodwork and textiles. Underlying my art practice is recognition of the human need to make a mark. My current work challenges the boundaries of the form that mark can take, engaging with printmaking, cross-media sculpture, constellation, assemblage and performance photography and video as well as traditional methods of mark-making. Enactment of mark-making and the compelling impact of indexical residue directs my embrace of Koestler's concept of creativity as '...a process where the teacher and pupil are located in the same individual...". In 2010 I was awarded K.V.T.A acquisitional Gouache prize for my painting, 'GariwerDrama". My first solo exhibition, "HUMAN CONDITION", a mixed media site specific sculpture showed at The Incinerator Arts Complex, Moonee Ponds , in November 2010. I was awarded an Arts and Culture Individual Initiative Grant from the City of Moonee Valley this year. I am contributing artist to "EITHER/OR arbitrary surface" @ Footscray Community Arts Centre and Trocadero ArtSpace, December 2010- February 2011.

Artist: Atoosa shokoohi Title: Human Nature Medium: Oil on Canvas. Size: H 75 -W 56 Art description: In this piece illustrates the Human's inner strength and devotion towards one another in times of despair. It is about how we naturally draw towards another in troubling times when they need us most. As human beings we are all connected to one another and our presence deeply and directly affects others. Just like the roots of trees we hold on to each other and grow stronger when we unite. Art has always taken a big part of my life, I Paint to express myself and also to detach from this commercialized world and think of a place that only exists in my head. Artist bio ATOOSA ATASHIN Born 1985 in Tehran, Persia, Currently living in Melbourne Australia. I have graduated in 2005 Bachelor of Industrial Design from RMIT University. I'm currently working part time on my new paintings. My style of painting is Surrealism, I've always been inspired by Salvador Dali's work and I admire his creativity. I believe being an Artist isn't just about creating something unusual and out of ordinary, it's about the depth, techniques and the message in the art work. Art is about introducing a different aspects and vision to the viewers and giving them a unique feeling.

The ideas within the novel, act as a series of meditations and offer us an alternative approach to the way we think about cities, how they are formed and how they function. As with the drawing, the novel also explores the themes of time and space, movement and change, the power of memory and how the past qualifies the future. Artist: Leah Mariani Title: Peter II Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 76cm x 56cm Art description: In this work I am exploring the use of pattern and colour in painting. I wanted the figure to remain grounded and masculine against the bright and colourful background. The transparent robe serves as a connection between flat background and the 3D form, ensuring the figure is immersed fully into its surroundings. Artist: Leah Mariani Title: Emily Medium: Mixed media on board Size: 100cm x 70cm Art description: The work shows an interest in pattern, texture and form. I love the contrast between the richly patterned garments and the flat areas of colour. The work has a textile feel to it, which is created by the use of different types of paper (mostly scraps of wrapping paper). Whilst the pose of the figure suggests a confident, modern day woman, the clothing is reminiscent of decades past. In this work you can see the influence of my favourite artist Gustav Klimt. Artist: Lizzie Pogson Title: In Praise of Shadows Medium: Sound Art Size: 9 Minutes Art description: "In Praise of Shadows" is a transitional sonic work constructed by using both natural and synthetic sound sources. Inspired by Barry Truax's 'walkman phenomenon', this work creates locational ambiguity by placing the listener within a series of hyper-real sonic environments. Real-world sounds are no longer tied to their original mechanisms, and synthetic sounds become believable within realistic aural spaces. As part of the creation of this work I made a series of field recordings in Japan using both binaural and stereo recording microphones. This work is part of a series of sound works that explores the spatial boundaries of what the listener perceives to be 'normal'. The playback of these recordings through loudspeakers (and not headphones), further obscures the listeners sense of space. ** The stereo file of this work is usually 143.8 MB, however, it is impossible for the work to be compressed to under 1MB like an image can be. In hope that this work can be included in this competition, a sample of the work can be heard here : http://lizziepogson.com/soundbites Artist bio: Lizzie's sound art practice involves the collection of field recordings and abstraction of this material to create discrete zones of aural experience. By juxtaposing natural and synthetic sound material in different combinations recorded natural spaces act as environments for the inclusion of synthetic sounds and vice versa. Lizzie has exhibited and performed her compositions in the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Liquid Architecture Festival (Melbourne), at West Space Gallery (Melbourne) and at Project Space Gallery (RMIT, Melbourne) for the group show 'Magnetic Traces' in 2010. She has also collaborated with sound artists Philip Samartzis and Camilla Hannan for live multichannel performances. Most recently, Lizzie was selected for the 'Hatched' exhibition to be held at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in April/May 2011. Lizzie has also been commissioned to write a new composition for the Parisonic Festival to be held in Paris (2011). Lizzie lives in beautiful regional Victoria.

Artist: Catherine van Wilgenburg Title: The Land of Iramoo Medium: Oil on Canvas Size: 2m x 2m Art description: 'Iramoo'*, the original Woiworung language name for the great grassy plains that once encircled the Melbourne area, is the inspiration for contemporary landscape paintings of St Albans, Cairnlea and Caroline Springs. This work is about connecting with the land in my own backyard - in Melbourne's West. Suburban homes are perched perilously and shallowly on top of deep layers of ground containing stencil images of indigenous flora and fauna It is part of the series 'Connecting with the Land', in which I put together our white settler past within the present landscape to see how disconnection from this land determines current beliefs and behaviours about the land in our own backyards. The landscapes are drawn from the 35 hectares at the Iramoo Sustainable Living Centre in St Albans and Cairnlea, at which I am Convenor of The Friends of Iramoo. Artist: Jo Garner Title: "Birds on High" Medium: Mixed media Size: 95 x 30cm Art description: This tower consists of reclaimed lamp base, plates, ornaments, flowers from various objects, oil burner and beads. This stands 95cm high and is 30cm wide - weight approx. 20kg. Artist bio: Jo is a former teacher now mixed-media artist who creates a new life from the bibs and bobs she gathers from others. She began some 4 years ago with a basic mosaics course, but has devoted herself more seriously to her art since selling her environmental business some 12 months ago. She works from her home studio in Montmorency Victoria. Motivation "In a throw-away world I hope that my pieces encourage people to think about the possibilities encapsulated in the ephemera in their life. What can they do with those broken or mismatched pieces of china that still hold memories but are no longer of use? Re-crafting other people's waste is an aesthetic and absorbing pursuit, and I hope my art pieces act as symbols of the beauty that is in everything, and a peaceful protest against the vain pursuit of 'more and more stuff'. "I am constantly inspired by the creativity of other artists. I get most of my ideas from strolling through second-hand shops which are full of surprises and opportunities. It is inspiring to re-craft other people's castoffs into pieces of art that I find beautiful." Exhibitions Diversity of Life, City of Whittlesea, 2010 9 x 5, Walker Street Gallery, 2010 "She who loves", Walker Street Gallery, 2011 " Creativity Unlocked", TheTown Hall Gallery, 2011

Artist: ying huang Title: kelly Medium: oil Size: 30x36inch Art description: Work one Title: Kelly Kelly (2011) is a highly personalised portrait based on the death mask of Edward Kelly, who was executed in 1880 at the Old Melbourne Gaol in Melbourne, Australia. The work invites the viewer to explore the difficulties of condemning the 'criminal' whilst simultaneously accepting the State's power to take life. The larger than life Kelly projects outwards, confronting the viewer with questions such as whether 'guilt' necessarily equates to 'evil', whether 'innocence' and 'guilt' are mutually exclusive, or when innocence (in a legal sense) becomes 'evil'. Although the death penalty has long since been abolished in Australia, Kelly recalls a relatively recent period in our history and reminds us of the shift that has since occurred in the local socio-political landscape. Accordingly, the work serves as a symbol of the fickle and sometimes arbitrary nature of conventional public morality and promotes the value in constantly questioning and re-examining that morality, particularly when it is codified into law. Finally, the viewer is invited to simply identify with Kelly as a fellow human being and to consider whether it is a mere trick of time, space and circumstance that separates us from the subject and his fate. Artist bio: Biography - Ying Huang I was born in North East China, arrived in Australia Melbourne in 2001 and am presently completing a bachelor of fine art at RMIT majoring in printmaking. Finalist Calleen Art Award 2011.

This piece expresses human thought on a global scale (hence the world map and array of countries in words) through the use of typography combined with art. The mind and light bulb expresses the idea of the human mind being the birth-place of all innovation. The hand and tree depicts the notion of caring for the environment as we move forwards into our future. The wording at the base of the piece indicates that we ought to be prepared for the future as it comes. Artist bio: I, Denzil Furtado, have a passion for art, music, travel and basketball. Contemporary and digital design is my preferred form of art, as it blends the modern aspects of this world to create a digital visual depiction of the things around us. Artist: Denzil Furtado Title: Mind Outburst Medium: photoshop Size: 5512 x 7874 pixels Art description: This piece is a depiction of the human mind's embrace of the future. Indeed, the human mind is the root of all innovation, all enterprise, and all endeavor. The featuring of the world map expresses humanity on a global scale, while the colorful abstract depicts the ideas/notions that come about as a result of human thought. The silhouette of the city skyline reflects the modernness of the city, and the quote is a true summary of what I believe is the truth behind being ready to face the future. Artist bio: I, Denzil Furtado, have a passion for art, music, travel and basketball. My preferred art form is contemporary and digital design, because it blends together and represents perfectly the aspects of the modern and historic world. Artist bio: With numerous solo and group exhibitions, as well as being selected as a finalist in numerous high-profile awards, Rehgan De Mather has quickly established himself as a young artist to watch. Since completing his BVA at Monash University Gippsland in 2001 De Mather has held 17 solo exhibitions and been involved in over 30 group exhibitions throughout Australia. He has been selected as a finalist three times in the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, twice in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize, John Leslie Art Prize & Arc Yinnar Drawing Prize, as well as being a finalist in the Prometheus Art Award, Araluen Art Prize, City of Whyalla Art Prize, Agendo Art Award, Black Swan Prize for Portraiture & Stanthorpe Arts Festival. He was a semi-finalist in the arts category of the Young Australian of the Year Awards and was also a recipient of a Regional Arts Development Grant through Arts Victoria. De Mather was born in Adelaide, grew up in Sale and currently lives and works in Melbourne. "Rehgan De Mather's paintings replicate the traces of industry, and the cryptograms of graffiti, on walls of contemporary spaces. They flash with comic book exclamations, bleed with paint scrawled behind alleyways, and are seared by an essence of New York grit. Rehgan's prolific output of work, for such a young artist, seems to be riding on a distinctly serious but fun attitude. His work is exciting because it is raw and has a genuine interest in the noises and signs that clutter urban spaces." David O'Halloran, Curator, Glen Eira City Gallery

In this work I have experimented heavily with new materials and layered painting to work towards my goal of a bodily representation that is "visually tactile." *Note file name is See 2 (not artwork title "See (2.1 and 2.2) as the title as file name makes the file corrupt) apologies. In this work I have experimented heavily with new materials and smooth layered oil painting to work towards my goal of a bodily representation that is "visually tactile." • 9.

  • 13. Cara-Ann is concerned with modes of listening/hearing in social situations and how people interact with sound. • 15. • 17. Artist bio: My Name is Christian Jordan Vallejos, born September 25 1992. I am 18 years old, I grew up in Melbourne Victoria Australia, and always had a passion for Art. As a kid I would focus all my attention in my art and realized this is what i wanted to do for the rest of my life.

The ideas within the novel, act as a series of meditations and offer us an alternative approach to the way we think about cities, how they are formed and how they function. I love the contrast between the richly patterned garments and the flat areas of colour. The work has a textile feel to it, which is created by the use of different types of paper (mostly scraps of wrapping paper). • 87.

It is inspiring to re-craft other people's castoffs into pieces of art that I find beautiful." • 111. Artist: ying huang Title: Jordan Medium: oil Size: 30x36inch Art description: Work one Title: Jordan Jordan(2011) is a highly personalised portrait based on the death mask of Edward Kelly, who was executed in 1880 at the Old Melbourne Gaol in Melbourne, Australia. The silhouette of the city skyline reflects the modernness of the city, and the quote is a true summary of what I believe is the truth behind being ready to face the future.
