Artist: Julian Clavijo Title: HUMAN DISINTEGRATION Medium: Wood and acrilyc paint Size: 300cm x 275cm Art description: "This artwork was created with the purpose of transmitting the fragility of a human being represented by the portrait of a real child holding a bullet belt. This brings back to children around the world suffering from corruption, violence, wars and starvation. The fragility and innocence of a child against the poison of war are shown together, representing how humanity is being disintegrated by the armed and the power domination by unfaithful politics" 3045 wood cubes individually placed and painted as pixels, are the essence of the work. Every single cube was cut, painted and crafted by the artist. Each cube plays a roll as individual separated from the ones around, giving the overall notion of disintegration. This way, the viewer at floor level can barely realize what is the artwork about but can see in detail the materialization of it. On the other hand, watched from above, the viewer has the chance to encounter from the distance what is the whole image about in detail. The act of the viewer being above the artwork to be able to look at it becomes an implicit message of the work Artist bio: Julian Clavijo is currently a post-graduate candidate at RMIT University. His field of study is Art in Public Space . A committed object maker, Julian has focused his research through the practice of material engagement. He has explored urban space and transformation through a practical study of pattern and colour shift in the changing city.

Artist: Cara-Ann Simpson Title: Melbourne sonic skyline: Studley Park Rd Medium: ink infused metal Size: 32.5 x 65 cm Art description: This artwork depicts the night skyline of Melbourne City from Studley Park Road, Kew - just over the Johnston Street Bridge, Abbotsford. In the foreground is a spectral analysis of a soundwave from recordings taken on Johnston St, Abbotsford. By incorporating a visual analysis of sound recordings from the area I am presenting works that encompass the physical space as both a visual representation and an aural analysis. Artist bio: Cara-Ann Simpson (b. 1985) is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on sculpture, sound, space and the participant. Cara-Ann is concerned with modes of listening/hearing in social situations and how people interact with sound. In 2010, Cara-Ann received an ArtStart grant from the Australia Council for the Arts to attend the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo (ICME2010, Singapore) where she presented a paper with collaborator Eva Cheng (research engineer) on an interactive sound installation. Artist: Cara-Ann Simpson Title: Merri Creek construction Medium: ink infused metal Size: 67 x 100 cm Art description: This work uses a photograph of the Merri Creek near where it meets the Yarra River in the Yarra Bend Park, Abbotsford. This site is significant to the Wurundjeri people and was a location for large gatherings; it is also a potential site for one of the earliest land treaties between Indigenous Australians and European settlers, as well as the site of the Merri Creek Aboriginal School and Assistant Protector William Thomas' hut. Within this artwork it is apparent that there has been great change to the site since European settlement with the footbridge in the background, as well as the Eastern Freeway, signage, and a road depicted. I am interested in the integration of architectural structures within the environment and am particularly drawn to this site due to the aesthetic appeal of the joining of the artificial and natural. The work also integrates a visual representation of sound from the area - this sound sample is of current construction (Feb-April 2011) as well as the ever present rumble of both the river and the traffic over the freeway. A temporary office and two cranes are apparent in the background of the artwork. The lone subject lingers in a void between the experience and a response to their environment. These continuous visual planes that represent vast environments allude to the timelessness of nature, in my attempt to consolidate both contemporary and historical time, to then allow the placing of a subject to become an entirely active study into man and site, culture and environment. I gained my Bachelor of Education (Art and Craft) @ Melbourne University, completing major studies in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, woodwork and textiles. Underlying my art practice is recognition of the human need to make a mark. My current work challenges the boundaries of the form that mark can take, engaging with printmaking, cross-media sculpture, constellation, assemblage and performance photography and video as well as traditional methods of mark-making. What is worse is that the Bangladeshi government is now working to phase out their way of living, replacing them with the more popular mode of transport: the automobile. Artist bio: Sharron Okines is an emerging Visual Artist who completed her Diploma of Visual Arts in 2010 with High Distinctions. Currently focusing on traditional printmaking disciplines, she has been selected to participate in several successful Group shows. Her first solo show with the "Love Letter" body of work is currently on exhibit in Melbourne city with another solo show booked for September 2011. She was awarded the Printmaking Encouragement Award by Chisholm Institute Frankston and was also selected as a finalist for the Mary and Lou Senini Student Award for Printmaking 2010 at McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park. Artist: Lizzie Pogson Title: In Praise of Shadows Medium: Sound Art Size: 9 Minutes Art description: "In Praise of Shadows" is a transitional sonic work constructed by using both natural and synthetic sound sources. Inspired by Barry Truax's 'walkman phenomenon', this work creates locational ambiguity by placing the listener within a series of hyper-real sonic environments. Real-world sounds are no longer tied to their original mechanisms, and synthetic sounds become believable within realistic aural spaces. As part of the creation of this work I made a series of field recordings in Japan using both binaural and stereo recording microphones. This work is part of a series of sound works that explores the spatial boundaries of what the listener perceives to be 'normal'. The playback of these recordings through loudspeakers (and not headphones), further obscures the listeners sense of space. ** The stereo file of this work is usually 143.8 MB, however, it is impossible for the work to be compressed to under 1MB like an image can be. Lizzie has exhibited and performed her compositions in the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Liquid Architecture Festival (Melbourne), at West Space Gallery (Melbourne) and at Project Space Gallery (RMIT, Melbourne) for the group show 'Magnetic Traces' in 2010. She has also collaborated with sound artists Philip Samartzis and Camilla Hannan for live multichannel performances. Most recently, Lizzie was selected for the 'Hatched' exhibition to be held at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in April/May 2011. The larger than life Kelly projects outwards, confronting the viewer with questions such as whether 'guilt' necessarily equates to 'evil', whether 'innocence' and 'guilt' are mutually exclusive, or when innocence (in a legal sense) becomes 'evil'. Although the death penalty has long since been abolished in Australia, Kelly recalls a relatively recent period in our history and reminds us of the shift that has since occurred in the local socio-political landscape. Accordingly, the work serves as a symbol of the fickle and sometimes arbitrary nature of conventional public morality and promotes the value in constantly questioning and re-examining that morality, particularly when it is codified into law. Finally, the viewer is invited to simply identify with Kelly as a fellow human being and to consider whether it is a mere trick of time, space and circumstance that separates us from the subject and his fate. This piece expresses human thought on a global scale (hence the world map and array of countries in words) through the use of typography combined with art. The hand and tree depicts the notion of caring for the environment as we move forwards into our future. 139. Artist: Pina Carrubba Title: Snow Gums, Fire then Ice Medium: Acrylic Paint Size: 63.5cm x 92.5cm Art description: In 2009 Victoria had the worst bushfires in Australia's recorded history. The dramatic change from fire to snow across the Alpine parts of Victoria and NSW inspired this piece. Monochrome acrylic paint was applied to MDF using only a palette knife. Artist bio: Have created art for 27 years. Trained as a graphic artist, preferrence in the creation of contemporary art via various mediums. My work is inspired by nature and how people live amongst their environment. Recently entered the inaugural City Coast Country exhibition at the Wyndham Art Gallery. My work (Our City Bursting At The Seams 2010) was selected to promote the event and to be reproduced as postcards which will also promote Arts and Culture in the city.
