9. The Genesis of OnBoard
In 2014–2015, Denison worked with Collegis Education to
create a skills-based, non-credit learning experience that
would be offered by the Knowlton Center for Career
Exploration.
Based on survey results of Columbus area employers, a
number of skills were identified and used to build learning
modules.
Leveraging student “down time,” OnBoard modules are
delivered during breaks

10. How It Works
In some ways, OnBoard components resemble a traditional
online college course. There is content to consume and
embedded assessment strategies allow the learner to prove
they understand the competencies.
Currently, students at Denison University are using these
modules to get a jumpstart on the job search. They have
opted, as a cohort, to leverage their calendar breaks (i.e.,
summer, winter and spring break) to engage in the Language
of Business courses.
OnBoard supplements Denison’s curriculum.

Enrollments, Badges, and Engagement
has increased over time. While only 1
cohort is complete in 2018, the
projection points to positive growth.
Growth from 2016 to 2017
has been noteworthy.
13. What’s Inside
The courses are set up with content delivered in a variety of
methods, working simulations, assessments and case study.
Once the assessments have been completed, the learner earns a
badge that is the concrete representation of their mastery of a
competency.
Often, students can take the badge language and use it directly
for their resumes.
Essentially, this learning takes place outside the curriculum
(non-credit and non-GPA weighted) and is coordinated with
Denison’s Career Center as a tool to give graduates a
competitive advantage in the job search.

26. Do successful graduates
impact enrollment?
Career outcomes are the #2 question we get from many
parents or prospective students – right after financial aid.
Prospective students and their parents want to see evidence
that a college’s graduates have successful outcomes post-
graduation.
When alumni and employers talk about the good experiences
they’ve had with Denison graduates, it reinforces the school’s
other branding efforts.
