2. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
3. WHAT IS A DISTRIBUTOR?
• A distributor is a company that buys rights to a film and then will decide weather to release the
production to a global or local independent audience. This decision is based on different things such as
the budget of the company and the appeal globally create by the particular film.
• Distribution is the process of getting a film to its consumer. This usually consists of marketing the
production and releasing it theatrically.
4. WALT DISNEY PICTURES
• Disney is an American based motion picture company distribution division owned by The Walt Disney
Company.
• This company was originally set up in 1953 as Buena Vista Distribution Company, this unit is in charge of
distributing, marketing and promotion for films produced by the Walt Disney Studios including Walt
Disney Pictures, Pixar Animation Studios, Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios etc. This is one of hollywoods ‘big 6’
companies meaning they have absolutely huge budgets to actually distribute their films.
• The films they typically distribute are very big, expensive films such as: The Avengers Assemble, Frozen
and Pirates of the carabbean.
5. MICROWAVE
• When it comes to independent film maker’s films being distributed it is a lot more likely that a smaller
company is going o distribute your film instead of a big company such as Pixar or Disney.
• There are certain schemes set up such as Microwave which was set up by FILM LONDON with the
intention to fund and promote young independent film makers. Microwave offers up to £25,000 to
support and distribute independent films.
• Microwave is funded from the BFI from the nation lottery fund and other sources.
• An example of the funding of Microwave is the 2009 British urban thriller, directed by Eran Creevy. The
film received £244,579 in the UK box office as it was only targeted at a local audience.
6. FILM 4
• Film 4 is particularly supportive of the UK film industry and has supported independent film makers
meaning they may be the most likely distribution company to support our product.
• Film 4 have distributed many very well known and popular films such as the inbetweeners series and
the film in 2014. It made over £14 million in the box office so was a very successful production.
7. FUNDING
• Like ours, there are also different ways that independent film makers can get funding in order to
distribute their products.
• Mainly the national lottery who offers grants and other things in order to help fund the British Film
Industry which the BFI (British Film Institute) award British film makers. This not only helps independent
film makers distribute their films but encourages them to make their films in the first place.
8. CONCLUSION
• After looking into it all, the most likely comapy that would take-on and distribute our product would be
Film 4 as they fund productions that are of a smaller scale and target smaller local audiences, it is a very
good way of getting known and in the film industry once you are known then you have a much greater
chance of becoming even more successful.
