Eating plenty of
fruits and
vegetables keeps
us healthier and
less likely to
develop disease.
We should fill half our plate with
     fruits and vegetables.
We should eat at least five fruits
  and vegetables every day.
Few children actually
eat the recommended
amounts of fruits and
   vegetables daily!

              Why?
The are the original fast foods
• They are convenient—handy size, can be
  eaten fresh
• They can be eaten on the go—grab an apple
  on your way out the door
• They can be prepared quickly—wash and ear,
  or peel and eat!
• They provide quick energy—carbohydrates for
  our bodies
Fruits and vegetables are
nutrient-rich as they have lots of
vitamins and minerals in
comparison to calories.
A food that is not nutrient-rich
(also called an empty calorie
food) provides calories with very
few vitamins or minerals.
Different fruits and vegetables
have different types of vitamins
and minerals—eating a variety is
very important.
Some of the most common
nutrients found in fruits and
vegetables are fiber, vitamin A,
vitamin C, B vitamins, iron,
calcium, folate and potassium
The nutrients in fruits and
vegetables improve health and
reduce risks of many diseases.
Fresh or lightly cooked fruits and
vegetables have more nutrients
than those that are over cooked,
frozen or canned.
