2. Climate
Change
• Probably the most climate dependent sector
• Local production fluctuates ~25%, globally <3%:
– trade / relief to balance surpluses and shortage
– Indicators on crop productivity, water use, climate conditions
are required for monitoring, policy, farmer support
• SIS Global Agriculture:
– Climate services in support of decision-making in agriculture
sector
– Support SDGs by providing credible and legitimate agro-
climatic data products

1. Agro-climatic indicators
Growing degree days, huglin index, cold/heat stress days, ...
2. Climate forcing data for crop models based on ERA5: AgERA5
Daily time steps, downscaled, bias corrected
3. Climate enhanced Earth Observation based indicators
Crop-specific biomass & yield, Actual evapotranspiration
4. Water based indicators
Soil moisture, surface / groundwater availability, river discharge, water stress
Global data products in support of public/private decision making and

ERA5 based agricultural land product
• 0.1x0.1 degree (~10 km)
• Daily variables from 1979 up till 2018, possibility for near real-
time product generation with a delay of ~1 week
• 22 variables relevant for agricultural applications:
– Temperature (avg, min, max, etc.)
– Precipitation and precipitation type
– Global radiation
– Daily avg vapour pressure and wind speed
– Relative humidity at specific times of the day

38th Elite Spring Wheat Yield Trial:
• 50 entries with two replications
• distributed to 150 locations in 2017
• grain yield data was voluntarily reported from 78 locations
• on 33 traits
• primarily from Less Developed Countries
• mean grain yield of 5.32 t/ha (1.1 to 10.6 t/ha)
