2. “ I have a dream for the web in which computers become capable of analyzing all
the data on the web”
(Tim Berners-Lee, 1999)

3. Web 1.0
– The Web is a system of interlinked documents accessed via the internet
– Web 1.0 is the term used to refer to the first stage of the World Wide Web that was
characterized by simple static websites that were not providing interactive content.
– In other words, the early web allowed the users to search for information and read it
(only one side of communication)
– The Only largest source of Information ever
Dr. Irfan ul Haq Akhoon
4. Web 2.0
– The term was invented by Darcy DiNucci in 1999 and later popularized by Tim O’Reilly and Dale Dougherty at the O’Reilly
Media Web 2.0 conference in late 2004.
– Web 2.0 (also known as Participatory and Social web) refers to websites that emphasize user-generated content, ease of
use, participatory culture and interoperability for end users.
– A Web 2.0 website allows users to interact and collaborate with each other through social media dialogue as creators of
user-generated content in a virtual community. This contrasts the first generation of Web 1.0 era websites where people
were limited to viewing content in a passive manner.
– Examples of Web 2.0 features include social networking sites or social media sites e.g., (Facebook), blogs, wikis,
folksonomies etc.
Dr. Irfan ul Haq Akhoon
5. Web 2.0
– People started to share photos and videos
– People started to interact in Social Networks
– People started to publish content in blogs and Wikis
– Tags and RSS are used
– A read write web
Dr. Irfan ul Haq Akhoon
7. Problems with Web 2.0
– Web pages are written in HTML
– HTML describes the structure of information
– Syntax not the Semantics
Dr. Irfan ul Haq Akhoon
8. Web 1.0, Web 2.0 and Web 3.0
– If Web 1.0 was the content web
– And Web 2.0 was the social web
– Then web 3.0 will be the one that brings them together and creates
meaning out of it—putting the content into the social context
Dr. Irfan ul Haq Akhoon
9. Web 3.0
– What if computer can understand the meaning behind information…
– Computers can learn what we are interested in
– Computers can help us better in finding what we want
– This is really what the semantic web is all about
Dr. Irfan ul Haq Akhoon
10. Web 3.0
– Web 3.0 also known as semantic web, was thought up by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide
Web.
– Semantic web is a web that can demonstrate things in the approach which computer can understand.
– The main important purpose of semantic web is to make the web readable by machines not only by humans.
– Semantic web is being to be developed to overcome the problems of current web (web 2.0).
– The semantic web (web 3.0) promises to organize the world’s information in a dramatically more logical way
than Google can ever achieve with their current engine design.
Dr. Irfan ul Haq Akhoon
11. Syntax and Semantics
– Syntax and semantics are all about Communication
– Every language has its own Syntax and Semantics
– Syntax is the study of Structure and style of information
– Semantics is the study of Grammar and Meanings behind information
– Syntax is how to say something
– Semantic is the meaning behind what you say
Dr. Irfan ul Haq Akhoon
12. Advantages
– Increased information linking: Semantic web will help in the connectivity of online data.
– A huge benefit of web 3.0 is to move towards being able to access information anywhere.
– Efficient sharing.
– More Efficient web browsing.
– Effective Communication.
– It can recognize People, Places, Events, Companies, Products, Movies, etc
– It can understand the relationships between things
Dr. Irfan ul Haq Akhoon
13. Challenges
– Tools/Compatibility: HTML files and current browsers couldn’t support web 3.0
– Privacy/Security: The user’s security is also in question since the machine is saving his or her
preference
– Vastness: The world wide web already contains billions of pages
– Vagueness: User queries are not really specific and can be extremely vague at the best of the
times.
– Applications
