Dr. William B. Clark is an experienced surgeon and owner of ENT
Associates of Northwest Florida, an ear, nose, and throat clinic located

also a supporter of the American Cancer Society.
This year, the American Cancer Society released a Head and Neck
Survivorship Guideline to help patients with head and neck cancers and
their physicians best work towards their long term treatment. Cancer can
appear in many places in the head and neck, but the report specifically
focuses on cancers of the oral cavity, such as the tongue, the lip, the
throat, and the larynx.
The guideline, published in the March 2016 issue of CA: A Cancer
Journal for Physicians, provides detailed recommendations for testing
for cancer recurrence, making healthy lifestyle changes, coordinating
care with providers and specialists, and managing the side effects of
treatment.
3. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
Up to 75 percent of head and neck cancers can be
attributed to smoking and alcohol consumption. HPV
(human papillomavirus) infections may account for
cancers of the oropharynx. Changing lifestyle factors such
as diet, substance abuse issues, and protection from
HPV, can help prevent cancer from arising or recurring.
As cancer treatments improve, there are more and more
survivors of cancer living in the United States today,
including an estimated 436,060 from head and neck
cancers. These survivors need to address long term care
issues as they age and ensure they are getting the
targeted care they need in order to continue to be healthy
and thrive after cancer.
