ChallengesRecord Keeping:
• Only 8% (1 in 12 ) farmers stated that they kept farm records.
This makes obtaining accurate information difficult.
• Little or no records on the number of days equipment was
used.
• Quantities used has always had low response and may
continue to prove difficult in future censuses.
Confidentiality issues:
• A challenge asking about Credit since many farmers were
reluctant to answer questions related to financing.
With the lack of record keeping and persons reluctance to
answer financial relate questions getting information on issues
like collateral for loan, length of loan, would be difficult.
- Education and training in record keeping to encourage
farmers to keep records.
- Specialized surveys be conducted eg. Irrigation, poultry
- Increase Public Relations and have programmes
explaining the reason for and the type of information
gathered in the next census.
- Conduct part of the census at a later date if possible or
over the phone. Especially if it goes over 45 – 60 minutes.
- More focus to be placed on GOAM and its impact on
organic farming.
- Look at the use of organic pesticides.
15
Recommendations / Way Forward
- Training in calculating area/ create awareness of area
calculation.
- Use of CAPI for data collection.
- Use of smaller measurement (feet) in calculating very
small areas.
16
Recommendations / Way Forward
Thank you

  • 14. 14 ChallengesRecord Keeping: • Only 8% (1 in 12 ) farmers stated that they kept farm records. This makes obtaining accurate information difficult. • Little or no records on the number of days equipment was used. • Quantities used has always had low response and may continue to prove difficult in future censuses. Confidentiality issues: • A challenge asking about Credit since many farmers were reluctant to answer questions related to financing. With the lack of record keeping and persons reluctance to answer financial relate questions getting information on issues like collateral for loan, length of loan, would be difficult.
  • 15. - Education and training in record keeping to encourage farmers to keep records. - Specialized surveys be conducted eg. Irrigation, poultry - Increase Public Relations and have programmes explaining the reason for and the type of information gathered in the next census. - Conduct part of the census at a later date if possible or over the phone. Especially if it goes over 45 – 60 minutes. - More focus to be placed on GOAM and its impact on organic farming. - Look at the use of organic pesticides. 15 Recommendations / Way Forward
  • 16. - Training in calculating area/ create awareness of area calculation. - Use of CAPI for data collection. - Use of smaller measurement (feet) in calculating very small areas. 16 Recommendations / Way Forward
