Who are FAI? • History – Set‐up in 2000 – An independent limited company – Based in Oxford • Personnel – Ruth Layton, Roland Bonney, Farm Panel.jpg Malcolm Pye, Paul Cook, Mike Gooding – Circa 20 farm staff, research teams, retained consultants • Objective – To drive solutions that deliver real benefits to animal welfare and the sustainability of farming

Livestock Farming … • Worldwide livestock farming employs 1.3 billion people • The livestock sector generates livelihoods for 1 billion of the World’s poorest people • Livestock product provide a 1/3 of humanity’s protein intake • But … the dynamics are changing • Population growth • Diet preferences • Available resources Livestock production is … socially significant

Number of Animals used … • Pigs 24.5 million • Cattle 5.6 million • Sheep 16.3 million • Chicken 896.6 million • Poultry 57.2 million • Other 0.6 million In 2004 more than 52 billion animals slaughtered Worldwide Source Food & Agriculture Organisation of the UN Livestock consumption is 2004 data … a lot of animals

Environmental Impact … The total global contribution of agriculture to climate change is estimated to be equivalent to between: 8.5 ‐16.5 billion tonnes of CO2 or between 17‐ 32% of all human‐induced greenhouse gas emissions *deforestation *methane *fertilizer use *water use *biodiversity loss Livestock production has both … impacts & benefits
