This was our pilot for the first Creative Writing Workshop which included Poetry. I’m
pleased to report that it went well, although I do feel there is room for improvement for the
next round. Our aim for this workshop was to educate and inspire our students in the art and
history of poetry. We did just that with majority of our students not only participating but
writing their own poems.
We received a lot of interest in the poetry especially; therefore we did expect these sessions to
be well-attended. Throughout the five weeks, we did have our regular students attend as well
as a few drop-ins although the overall popularity did not exceed 3. One issue that may have
caused this might have been stadium events clashing with our classes frequently. However
this issue will be resolved by the next session as we will be moving locations which will
hopefully allow more students to brave event days.
As I noted earlier, many of our participants came not only to learn but to write in the style of
poetry that was being studied that week. Through the exercise of writing poetry in different
genres/ages, our students were able to find the form and style they prefer to write in and left
with some very interesting self-penned poems. We as tutors had a lot of great ideas and
suggestions from our participants which only helped us as tutors to progress and improve for
next time.
Conclusively, our final session went well and through the lively debate and discussion
between participants and tutors, we have planned on continuing this project further.
