Share the idea
The idea for One Umbrella was born in 2001, out of concern for the amount of waste
within the food industry and food insecurity amongst the homeless. What if the food
could be rescued before being thrown out to landfill, and then redirected to those who
need it?
One Umbrella provides the unique, commonsense solution. We collect unwanted and
surplus food from a range of organizations: restaurants, caterers, bakeries, hospitals,
food manufacturers and markets. Close to half of this goes directly to agencies for
immediate use. We take the rest of these good fresh ingredients to our commercial
kitchen. With a bit of creativity and a lot of committed volunteers, we turn them into
nutritious emergency relief meals for agencies catering to the homeless and hungry
of Melbourne.
In 2005 One Umbrella’s Board adopted a new strategic plan to guide the organisation
for the next 5 years. A new Vision and Mission was adopted:
OUR VISION
A society where food is not wasted
and hunger is minimised.
OUR MISSION
One Umbrella exists to:
• Rescue food that would
otherwise have been wasted.
• Produce and distribute meals to
people in need.
• Provide advocacy for people
suffering from hunger and food
insecurity.
• Promote awareness of the issue
of food insecurity and the value
of food rescue.
• Foster Australia-wide
implementation of food rescue
programs.

REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT AND THE CEO
One Umbrella has worked very hard towards its vision of 'A society where food is not
wasted and hunger is minimised'. 2005–2006 was a very rewarding year for us, and
everyone associated with the organization can feel very proud. Meal production was
increased by 33% on the previous year to 256,000 meals, with the accompanying
waste reduction having a significant impact on the environment.
All of this takes support and effort and I would like to acknowledge the generous
support of the community for our work, enabling us to consolidate and improve our
financial situation. Earlier this year, we held a very successful event with ANZ Private
Banking for our patrons. We were thrilled with the passion and enthusiasm they
showed for our work, and know that when we need to proceed in the future, we can
count on their active support.
We are indebted to the 150 dedicated volunteers who regularly give up their time each
week, fortnight or month. On top of that, the corporate support from organizations
such as Price Waterhouse, the ANZ Bank and The National in the form of volunteers
and financial support has been tremendous.
Our kitchen leader Julien Jane has again risen to the challenge, juggling ingredients,
meal deliveries and people in a space we are rapidly outgrowing, and we want to pay
tribute to her, along with Sandy Dudakov, and the rest of the kitchen team.
The Melbourne community has embraced the culture of food
rescue, and we now have a full book of committed food donors,
and a waiting list of volunteers. One Umbrella is poised on the
brink of a huge growth surge. However we have now reached
the stage where only our limited kitchen space is holding us
back from achieving this. The board has considered merger
options, and is actively looking for larger premises to allow us to
significantly expand production, and move forward to the next
exciting stage.
One Umbrella straddles two issues: hunger awareness and
environmental sustainability, through the reduction of food
wastage from the 750,000 tonnes of food thrown out in Victoria
annually. This makes us unique in what we do.
One Umbrella is a special organisation that, while small, is
punching above its weight and making a real difference. It comes
with a lot of good will and a lot of hard work and these need
to be celebrated. There are infinite possibilities, and as always
this comes with some challenges, but with the help of all of our
supporters, we will get there.

I’ve been getting food from One Umbrella for 6 years. It’s very popular. They are the only ones
we know that prepare the food for us. It’s ready to eat.

Food security is important for each and every human being. It is a significant problem
in many of our communities and is not confined to the homeless, but can hit any one
of us at any time. Ill health, trauma, mental illness, addiction, loss of income, or loss
of employment or housing and ageing can all result in people going hungry.
One Umbrella is there to help with the simple act of sharing a meal.
We all need to share in caring for our environment for a better future. Over 750,000
tonnes of food is thrown out in Victoria annually. As part of One Umbrella’s
commitment to environmental sustainability, the organisation continues to make a
significant contribution towards the reduction of food wastage in this state.
In 2005–2006 over 80 Victorian businesses provided unwanted food or food donations
to One Umbrella. We were able to rescue 69 tonnes of food, nearly 6 tonnes per
month, from landfill. This allows impacts on greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced
by at least 16 tonnes.
In 2005–2006, One Umbrella distributed over 256,000 meals at
no cost to agencies working with the homeless and hungry.
This reflects a 33% increase on the previous financial year, and
is 26,000 meals above our target for the year.
One Umbrella has come a long way since we began in 2001–2002,
producing just under 15,000 meals per year — we are now
producing almost 21,000 per month! Our goal in 2006–2007 is
to exceed 305,000 meals.
Share our resources
We now come once a week to pick up, not once a month like before. We get freshly cooked food,
usually pies, sausage rolls and quiches. The food is put in our freezer to store and we distribute it
on Monday and Friday to the needy in the streets.
The food from One Umbrella is a huge bonus to us. We have now been able to lift restrictions on the
number of times the needy can attend for assistance. Now we always have something we can give
them in an emergency food parcel. We no longer have to buy food with cash donations, instead we
can use the money to buy other essentials .
Robin Poole, Chairman, Ecumenical Food Centre, Richmond

Share commitment
Every month, approximately 150 volunteers assist One Umbrella with administration,
baking, and driving, sharing their time and energy to help our clients in need.
Without their hard work and commitment, our production levels would not be possible.
They are the inspiration and motivation behind the organisation. There is a sense of
community and passion amongst volunteers that shines through. They tend to stay on
for the long term, with the result that our current roster of volunteers is filled.
Our Corporate Volunteering Project continues to thrive, with many companies
participating in our baking teams. Thank you to The National, ANZ, Price Waterhouse
and many others.
We now have 600 corporate volunteers and each week, teams of up to 10 people
leave their offices behind and bake in our kitchen. Many return, finding it a fun, richly
rewarding and positive experience to actively make a difference within our community.
I like it because you work hard for a few hours and you feel a great reward that some hungry
person is going to get the benefit in a couple of days. It’s straight out helping somebody. It’s the
sort of thing anybody could do. There is a great atmosphere and you meet all sorts of people.
Everybody’s very friendly and inclusive, and everybody feels very welcome.
Catherine Loader, One Umbrella volunteer
It’s terrible people needing food in this way, but it’s great that it is available in such abundance.
More people are now donating food, and it’s great quality food. The recipes we make are
nutritious, interesting, flavoursome to eat, and easily stored and served. When we leave,
I feel real satisfaction that we have provided food for people who need it.
Ronna Moore, One Umbrella volunteer

Summary of Accounting Policies
Financial Reporting Framework
One Umbrella Australia Inc. is not a reporting entity. This special purpose financial
report has been prepared to satisfy the Committee of Management reporting
requirements under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 and in compliance with
applicable Australian Accounting Standards.
The Financial Report has been prepared on the basis of historical cost and except
where stated, does not take into account changing money values or current valuations
of non current assets. Cost is based on the fair value of the consideration given in
exchange for assets.
Significant Accounting Policies
The following significant accounting policies have been adopted in the preparation of
the financial report:
a) Accounts Payable
Trade payables and other accounts payable are recognised when One Umbrella
Australia Inc. becomes obliged to make future payments resulting from the purchase
of goods and services.
b) Acquisition of Assets
Assets acquired are recorded at the cost of acquisition, being the purchase
consideration determined as at the date of acquisition plus costs incidental to the
acquisition.
c) Depreciation
Depreciation is provided on the motor vehicle and capital equipment exceeding $1000.
Depreciation is calculated on a straight line basis so as to write off the net cost or
other revalued amount of each asset over its expected useful life.
The following estimated useful lives are used in the calculation of depreciation:
– Motor Vehicle 5 Years
– Capital Equipment 10 Years
10. ONE UMBRELLA THANK ALL OUR GENEROUS SUPPORTERS
This year support came from numerous donors, philanthropic trusts and foundations, with contributions totalling $191,327 enabling us to reverse our negative
financial position of the previous year.
FOOD DONORS
Surplus food is provided to us by 80 organisations. This may include food that is close to use by date or food that is excess to needs for many reasons.
Due to our work with government, donors are protected from legal action under Victoria’s 'Good Samaritan Act'. The food must be safe to consume and
donors follow stringent guidelines to ensure food safety.
The successful partnership with Epworth Hospital continues to grow. They donate unused product from their breakfast trays, which is sorted by One Umbrella
volunteers and distributed to school breakfast programs. This nutritious meal ensures children can start their school day with the energy they need.
We thank all our regular and newer food donors who share their good fortune and support our work. Donors include:
