DEFINITION:
A phrasal verb is a group of
words that functions as a verb
and is made up of a verb and a
preposition, an adverb, or both
1. Get Away: To Escape
Example: The bank robbers got away
2. LOOK FOR: To seek or search for
something
EXAMPLE: I'm looking for my keys.
Have you seen them?
3. TAKE OVER: To take control of
something
EXAMPLE: Who is going to take over the
family business when my father dies?
4. GO ON: To Continue
EXAMPLE: Please, go on. Don't let me
interrupt you
5. CALL UP: To Telephone (Make a call)
EXAMPLE: I called Sam up to see if he
wanted to go to the movies
6. PULL DOWN: To Earn
EXAMPLE: My English teacher pulls down
about $300,000 a year
7. COME BACK: To Return
EXAMPLE: What time are you coming back?
8. WORK OUT: To Exercise
EXAMPLE: I work out three times a week at
the fitness center
9. BREAK WOWN: To stop working properly
EXAMPLE: The car broke down in the desert.
10. GROW UP: To Mature
EXAMPLE: Your brother needs to grow up and
start thinking about his future
