The document discusses hurricanes and provides information on their definition, history in Florida, tracking, and impacts. It defines a hurricane as a tropical storm with winds over 74 mph. It notes that southwest Florida is highly vulnerable to hurricanes due to its historical occurrences. Between 1873 and 1993, the region experienced 49 hurricanes, though some early storms may have been of lower intensity. The document also describes how the Gulfstream-IV jet is used to track hurricanes and better predict landfalls and intensities. It lists the main impacts hurricanes bring as high winds, heavy rain, tornadoes, and lightning.

3. WHAT IS A HURRICANE?
• A hurricane is defined as a tropical storm
with sustained winds equaling or exceeding
seventy-four miles per hour
(approximately64.3 knots).
4. HURRICANES AND FLORIDA
• Southwest Florida has been identified by the
National Weather Service as one of the most
hurricane-vulnerable areas of the United States.
The potential for large-scale loss of life and
property during a hurricane is great. The analysis
of hurricane probability is based upon historical
occurrences in Southwest Florida, as showed in
data available from the National Climatic Center.
5. FLORIDA’S HURRICANE
HISTORY
• From 1873 to 1993,
Southwest Florida
experienced forty-nine
tropical cyclones of
hurricane intensity. Eight
of these typical cyclones
prior to 1885 were thought
to be tropical storms or
hurricanes. Therefore,
some of these early storms
could have been below
hurricane intensity.
6. HURRICANE TRACKING JET
• A jet called the
Gulfstream-IV flies
around tropical
cyclones to enable a
better picture of the
upper atmosphere of
the storm and better
predict landfall time
and intensity.
8. WIND AND RAIN
• Hurricanes bring 75+
MPH winds with
heavy rains and
flooding.
9. TORNADOES
• With hurricanes comes
the strong possibility
of tornadoes so pay
close attention to those
clouds during a
hurricane!!
10. LIGHTNING
• During a hurricane or
any other storm you
can almost bet there is
going be lightning.
Sometimes what is
known as reverse
lightning like seen
here can occur.
11. CAUTION!!
• Remember that during any storm you
should stay indoors and not be on the roads
unless evacuation is necessary.
• Be sure to have plenty of food and drink
available incase you can’t get to a store.
