Review Of Final Major Project
1. REVIEW OF FINAL MAJOR PROJECT (FMP)
Student Name: Georgie Long Pathway: Media
Production Foundation
Final Major Project Title: Caught
You will need to submit this evaluation with your full project hand in
1. Briefly describe the final outcome of your project and the progress
you have made, and if applicable how it differs from your original Project
Proposal:
The final outcome of my project is a 2.45-minute film about morality and theft
among young people. I have also created a marketing campaign surrounding
this film. The final project differs from my original proposal in that it is more of
a domestic drama than a crime drama. I went down many routes with my
project and eventually found the one that best suited my style of writing and
the moral premise of the film.
2. What methods have you used to show how your learning has effected
your project eg FMP Blog/ FMP Plan/ sketchbooks etc, and how has this
helped with development of your work:
Throughout this project I have used my sketchbook and my blog to explore
ideas and to experiment. I have gathered feedback from my peers and tutors
and reflected on my work in my blog. My sketchbook has helped my creative
mind to explore many different routes and pathways until I found the best
ones. This has helped me develop my work through reflecting and
experimenting to find the best route for my film.
3. List the targets met (from the original FMP Plan and any that were
added later):
I successfully met my target of primary and secondary research and my target
of experimenting, filming and editing.
I have written a sub-textual dialogue based script based on the theme or
morality.
I have created a short film from the script based around young people and
making moral mistakes.
I have created a marketing campaign surrounding the film.
4. Reflecting on your overall final major project, please discuss any
developments which have contributed to the final outcome:
2. The script worked very well. The final draft was sub-textual and it portrayed
the relationship between the characters exactly how I wanted it to. The colour
grading went well, after some stress at the beginning I really found my feet
and was very happy with the final outcome.
Having more time for the actual shoot would have made things a lot easier,
also having more crewmembers. The shoot was rushed and stressful due to
time constraints. If we had had more time and crew we would have made sure
to have got all the correct shots and done more takes to ensure the continuity
of the film.
If I had to do this project again I would have not spent as much time
researching even though we were advised to do so. I would have got on to
writing sooner and we would have had more time to perfect the script without
as much stress. This would have given us more time to make sure the filming
went smoothly and there would have been time to reshoot.
I was surprised during this project when we suddenly realised that we had
been going too far down the wrong path and needed to rewrite the script to
bring it back to more of a domestic drama.
This project has prepared me well for starting my degree course next year. It
has helped me to develop my blog and sketchbook skills and I have become
much better at reflecting and experimenting. I have learned a lot about specific
film techniques and also areas like colouring and sound design.
5. Please state what advice you received from others during your FMP,
and discuss what you found particularly useful: you should refer to
group reviews, one-to-one tutorials and feedback from evaluation groups
I was told to stick to the genres I am most interested in. I was also told I should
research more into the kind of editing used in the genre I am working in and
make sure it fits.
6. Key points to take away – things to change about my approach (give
at least 2) eg improve time management, what skills you have developed
and how this will affect your future course/career and things to continue
doing and to build on (give at least 2). What are you going to do next
year?
(NOTE – you may find it useful to refer to this document at the beginning
of your next self managed project.)
3. 1. Trusting my own gut about time management. There were a few times
when I was told what to do by my tutors when it came to time
management. The times I took the advice I found it was a hindrance
and prevented my project from progressing as well as it should. The
few times I ignored them and trusted my gut I found it helped me
enormously and I was able to get all the work done in the way I found
easiest to do.
2. I need to learn to get better at taking criticism. I have come a long way
from last year but I still tend to take criticism rather personally and I
need to learn to distance myself from my work and accept and evaluate
criticism to help my work reach its full potential.
