The legend of the sacred stone
Our story begins a long time ago, one
peaceful, clear, ordinary night, when a piece broke from
a very distant star. No one knows why this happened or
why the star came straight to our planet and fell down on
a specific place; but the old people who know the story
from their ancestors say that a powerful light, similar to a
lightning, could be seen that moment. It is said that the
little piece of star followed its way as if an invisible hand
directed it and it finally stopped somewhere on our lands.
People tell that the star came to a fairytale
land, a mountain covered with beautiful forests and
crossed by rich rivers. It was the home of the most skillful
hunters. Those lands had been destined to receive the
piece of star, just like it, in its turn, had been directed to
this part of the world. … However there was a man who
did not fear it and even more so, he felt attracted to the
unusual stone. He went straight to the stone, without
thinking too much, he watched it, raised it easily as if it
was sacred and took it to the cave where he lived
together with his family
. He was hoping that the star fallen from the sky
would help him live an easier life… whenever people
needed it, it lit the fire which had been so difficult to
get before. More than that, the cavemen enjoyed its
blessed light. No one suspected that the stone had
other powers too, as they were happy with the heat
and the light that were given to them…The master of
the stone looked at its soft light wondering if the
stone had other unknown powers and when would
someone reveal them. What was the fate of that holy
gift? He was old and one day he passed away. From
that moment the star seemed to become useless. No
one could touch it not even the sons of the one who
had found it. It stayed on the same place: on the
table, in the cave. It continued to shine even more
stronger than before but people couldn’t use it
anymore.
So in a few years people forgot about the stone and
only seldom somebody went into the cave to see it.
Little by little all those who knew about the stone
passed away and finally even the star disappeared.
However a strange thing happened. A strange light
having the shape of an old man appeared from time
to time during the night. It stood still for some
moments, then suddenly it disappeared as if it had
never been there. People were convinced that it was
the god of time as he was the only one who could
control the time and called it Father Time. Father
Time was the spirit of the man who had once found
the piece of star becoming its master. He was the
spirit of the stone as the Geto-Dacians would later
name him… Together with the spirit, the stone
protected those wonderful fairytale lands…
Father Time felt that bad things would
happen to that country. He decided to take care of what
was the most precious thing the Geto-Dacians had: the
magic star. Only the chosen ones were allowed to see
the stone. The spirit knew that there would be a time
when the enemies of that people would become strong
enough to get close to the stone. So he had to do
something to keep it even better. It would be so difficult
to get to the blessed light of the stone that only the
Mother Star and the Gods could choose the one that
was good enough to go there. It would be locked with
seven locks and it would be surrounded by seven
mountains. With the help of the stone the spirit began to
dig halls down to the heart of the mountain. They were
meant to protect the stone from the eyes of the mortals.
Unfortunately not after a long time the mountain would
hide the Sacred Stone forever,or at least for an age that
hasn’t ended yet. To get to know what happened in the
outside world, as Father Time himself would be hidden
into the mountain, the Spirit sculptured a piece of rock,
giving it the shape of a human head which he called
The Sphinx. He gave the sculpture unmeasurable
powers in order to protect the Sacred Area, the eyes and
the ears of the Spirit, which would last forever as the
Geto-Dacians’ holy spirit.
Not only Father Time and the Sacred Stone protected
the destiny of the people but also the sky was their
friend… time passed but both the Sphinx and the Sacred
Stone stood still to take care of the fate of that people
and of the beautiful country that had been born. Today
the stone lies in the heart of the Hidden Mountain, but
the Sphinx can be seen by anybody; however only the
pure-hearted ones are able to hear and understand his
words.
