Check out our October 8, 2014 presentation on how to make a Glassdoor Best Place to Work list! Learn from the winners how they became a Best Place to Work.
Hi and thank you for joining our webinar “How to Become a Best Place to Work – 5 Traits of the Winners” webinar.
A few webinar tips – you will be muted throughout the session so make sure to ask questions in the questions pane and Lisa would be happy to answer them along the way, or if we don’t get to your question on the webinar today, we’ll follow up with you afterwards.
And now I’d like to introduce our speaker for today’s webinar. Lisa Holden is an Employer Engagement Manager here at Glassdoor. Now I’ll hand it over to Lisa to get started. Lisa?
Being a Best Place to Work means that your employees vouch that they want to work for you. It doesn’t mean that you have to be a Facebook or a Google. In fact, the majority of last year’s list were NOT even tech companies! Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work list is not vertical specific. In fact, the list covers every company vertical on Glassdoor.
The key is to be good to your employees and you’ll reap the rewards with this award at the end of the year!
Not only is the award give you bragging rights to key stakeholders at your organization, but it also means that your employees like working for you. 95% of last year’s winners believe that this award will help them recruit top talent. Right? If your employees are happy, they will help you recruit other A players to come and work for your company as well.
82% feel being recognized as a Best Place to Work improves employee morale. And with good morale, current employees are more likely to stick around for the long haul.
Again, the majority of the companies on the Best Places to Work list are NOT tech companies! We also include every size company in Best Places to Work with our Mid-size Best Places to Work list that covers companies from 1-1,000 employees and our large list that covers companies with 1,000 employees or more. And you don’t need extravagant perks to win! Again, this list covers every single company size. The goal here is to achieve transparency and have two-way conversations with existing employees to ensure they enjoy working at your company or if changes need to be made. Remember, no company is perfect. Even the winners have stuff that they could work on.
So with that said, let’s talk about 5 areas or traits that the Best Places to Work companies have. We look at all our winners year over year and picked out the common themes that we see in their reviews. Here we go!
Trait #1 – you have to ensure that people matter at your organization. From the receptionist to your VP’s and General Managers. Every employee matters and this shows in the reviews of the Best Places to Work organizations.
Have you ever heard the saying that you are who your friends are? Well your company is only as good as the people that it’s made of, and good people attract other good people. Ensuring that every employee is heard and recognized is important.
I know at Glassdoor we have awards to recognize employees who stand out every quarter, and awards specific to departments. Putting these types of recognition programs in place will help ensure your success!
So the action plan to ensure your people matter is:
Recruit people that enhance your culture.
Have high hiring standards. Don’t settle even for one position. Each person contributes to the overall culture of your business.
Don’t let candidate quality ever be sacrificed. Make sure your candidates are informed about your culture the minute they set foot in your organization.
A quote that I really like from Lawrence Bossidy, a former executive at GE, is: “At the end of the day you bet on people, not on strategies.”ww
Trait #2 – is all about people feeling heard. In order to become a Best Place to Work, there has to be transparency from top to bottom at an organization.
It’s impossible to achieve that without listening to your employees.
If you haven’t seen, we have a program on Glassdoor to reward transparent employers called “OpenCompany”. The 5 steps help ensure that you are a transparent company by asking to reviews, responding to reviews, updating your mission and photos, and linking to Glassdoor from your site. It’s important that you stand behind what employees are saying about your organization and this program helps reward those employers for doing so.
The action plan here is not just to send company surveys to get in touch with employees and evaluate the feedback.
The BEST companies send company surveys and then close the loop on the key themes they heard from it and the strategy they have to fix any problems that employees bring up. It’s all about transparency and embracing that no company is perfect. Highlight your strengths and address the things that need to be worked on within your organization.
The third trait is to ensure clear paths for growth for your employees. Now that we’ve talked about the people at your organization, it only makes sense that we’d help point out one key trait that will keep those people at your company when you have them—opportunities for career advancement and training.
We combed through the winning company’s reviews and almost everyone has employees that boast about this top trait. Employees are most engaged when they are not stagnant. The best companies keep their employees challenged, constantly developing new skills and in a constant state of learning.
33% of employees left their last job due to lack of career growth, so not only is it crucial to your strategy for Best Places to Work, but it’s also imperative if you want to keep your existing employees and prevent attrition.
So again, average companies approve any training, keep employees in the role they were hired to do, and don’t have a clear action plan for growth in each review cycle. The best companies send employees trainings that will help them further their career within their organization, present new challenges and career opportunities to keep employees engaged and have clear action plans that they go over every review period.
This brings me to our next trait which is to ensure that your leaders at your organization are top notch! Leaders matter and this theme comes out over and over in reviews of the winners – that they support their leaders and feel that they are supported and lead in the right direction.
In order to ensure that you remain a Best Place to Work amongst candidates, it is vital that you have a clear vision and constant reinforcement of the direction that the company is headed.
Here is a quick checklist of average leaders versus strong leaders. Be sure that everyone in a leadership role has these top qualities:
That they are tough and decisive and prioritize being respected over being liked
Have confidence in all decisions and direction of the company
And communicate to ensure everyone knows where the company is headed at any given time
We’ve all asked ourselves at one point or another –how important really are the perks to your employees and what perks are the most important to ensure employee retention?
Well trait #5 is all about the perks! Company perks help build a sense of pride amongst your employees. Your employees want to brag about their work environments to their friends and feel proud of where they work.
And again – this doesn’t always mean extravagant perks, but show employees that you are going the extra step to keep them happy everyday. I think Josh Bersin from Bersin by Deloitte said this well at our Employer Branding Summit. “Life is too complicated outside of work for work to be complicated too”. Do everything you can to keep your employees day to day as easy as possible so they can be productive and do their best work! Whether that’s having a food truck come on site or dressing up on Halloween – employees recognize the perks and will post reviews about them and photos on social media.
Here are the top 5 employee motivators.
Is a raise – so make sure you are actively checking on Glassdoor that your salaries are competitive within your industry
46% love unexpected treats – bring in that candy on Halloween and treat your employees to unexpected things
40% like to be involved in the decision making process
37% like opportunities for career development – whether that’s offsites or bringing trainers onsite
35% enjoy recognition of their accomplishments at their organization
So as you can see - money, unexpected treats/rewards, and being involved in the decision-making process top the list of biggest employee motivators! Here are some ideas we have for unexpected treats. I know at Glassdoor, I was happy to see around Christmas a hand signed thank you note for my hard work throughout the year. Employees remember and will write reviews about when you go the extra mile for them.
Ok so that wraps up my overview on Best Places to Work. Be sure you have an employee engagement strategy in place and we’ll be deciding winners within the next month. Our winners will be announced on December 10th!
If you have 1,000 or more employees, you must have at least 50 approved company reviews during the past 12 months on Glassdoor.
If you have less than 1,000 employees, you must have at least 20 approved company reviews during the past 12 months on Glassdoor.
And as you can see we pick winners based on the quality of reviews, quantity of reviews and consistency of reviews. Now I’ll open it up for some questions.
