Spain has extensive coastlines along the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, and it contains two archipelagos. The Atlantic coast extends into Galicia, Andalusia, and the Canary Islands and is generally high and rocky with cliffs and estuaries. The Mediterranean coast stretches from France to Gibraltar along Andalusia and the Balearic Islands and is typically low and sandy. The Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean are rocky but contain sandy beaches while the Canary Islands in the Atlantic are volcanic in origin and very mountainous.
